Modi government anti-women, says Congress leader

New Delhi, Jul 16 (IANS): On a day Congress chief Rahul Gandhi wrote to the Prime Minister to seek support for Women's Reservation Bill in Parliament, a woman leader of the opposition party on Monday said the "anti-women" government had betrayed women on all counts.

"We are approaching the last monsoon session (of Parliament) of this NDA government and the picture for Indian women is bleak and gloomy. Like all other aspects of governance, it is finally established that empowerment of women and assurance of their personal security was only a 'jumla'," said Mahila Congress President Sushmita Dev.

The Mahila Congress during the day organised a jeep rally here to protest the government's "anti-women" policies.

"The shrill speeches and hyperbole of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at public rallies can't hide the fact that the BJP has betrayed the women of India on all counts. Some mindless policies made in a hurry as a knee-jerk reaction to situations, devoid of any thought to long-term implications, in-depth research or consultation with civil society and stakeholders have been rushed through Parliament in the name of women empowerment," she added.

She said: "The end result is that the list of promises made to women in the BJP manifesto ahead of the 2014 general elections now reads like a list of Modi government's shameful failures."

"The BJP -- which referred to women as nation builders in its 2014 manifesto -- has managed to bewilder women by the detrimental actions and inactions of its Ministers, leaders and workers," Dev added.

The Congress' woman leader said: "This government's policies are not aimed to fulfil its commitment to women. Their policies come as a damage control to save the face of the Prime Minister and cover the anti-women agenda of the BJP-RSS combine."

She also claimed that the commitment to provide one third reservation in seats for women in assemblies and Parliament stands breached.

"The commitment to strictly implement laws related to women, particularly those related to rape, has been breached. The commitment to save the girl child and educate her under the 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' campaign too has been breached. The commitment to the dignity of women in all spaces has been breached," Dev said.

"Will the Prime Minister come forward in the coming session of Parliament to answer the Congress charges? Otherwise, it will be assumed that he is guilty," she added.

As many as 39 crimes against women were reported every hour in India, up from 21 in 2007, according to Crime in India 2016 report by National Crime Records Bureau.

The rate of crime against women–crimes per 100,000 female population–was 55.2 in 2016, up from 41.7 in 2012.

As many as 2.5 million crimes against women have been reported in India over the last decade. Reported cases of crime against women increased 83% from 185,312 in 2007 to 338,954 in 2016.

Uttar Pradesh–India’s most populous state–reported the most (15%) crimes against women in 2016–49,262, or six every hour. UP was followed by West Bengal (32,513), Maharashtra (31,388), Rajasthan (27,422) and Madhya Pradesh (26,604).

Four rape cases were reported every hour in the country in 2016, up from two every hour in 2007. Madhya Pradesh registered the most cases (4,882), while Sikkim reported the highest crime rate for rape (30.3). The nationwide crime rate was 6.3.

Reported rape cases have increased 88% from 20,737 in 2007 to 38,947 in 2016. Of 39,068 rape victims in 2016, 43% were girls below 18 years.
Referring to numerous cases of assaults on women including the most highlighted recent cases of rapes that happened in Kathua (Jammu), Unnao (Uttar Pradesh) and also the rallies taken out in support of accused by BJP leaders (as in Kathua gang rape an murder case) or attempt to protect BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar (in Unnao Gang Rape Case), UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s controversial decision to withdraw case against BJP’s former union minister Swami Chinmayanand, accused of raping a woman in his Ashram, the report termed as farce the saffron party’s slogans from “Bahut Hua Naari Par Vaar, Abki Baar, Modi Sarkar” given during 2014 general elections campaign to “Beti Bachao, Beti Padao” after coming to power.
Perhaps PM Modi is the only leader in the world who follows Twitter trolls of his followers who issue rape, murder, abuse and still put tag 'Proud to be followed by Modi'.

Sri Narendra Modi doesn't like to come forward in the parliament to answer opposition's questions which is not a people friendly approach rather he goes out to the general public and speaks loudly, clearly with action about his future dreams and misgivings of congress from 70 years and carrying inappropriate surname to the people from a bullet proof, sound proof in one way communication line.

He did not even divorce her. Which if he did, would have allowed her to remarry.

He just abandoned her and let her be and his foolish bhakts say that the encouraged her to become a teacher.

Well he certainly did not give her the privilege of becoming a mother.

    What a waste.
