Udupi, Jul 20: Sri Vishwesha Theertha Swamiji of Pejawar Math explained here on Friday, July 20, why he could attend the funeral of Shiroor seer who passed away on Thursday.

Speaking to media persons, Swamiji said, “When I heard about the death news, I was in Hubballi. No ways I could travel and reach here as it would have taken me minimum seven hours. I had a predetermined programme in Sirsi in the evening which I attended and then proceeded to Udupi,”

“I am aware that my absence raised many eyebrows. But I could not come because of the travelling duration involved. There is no other reason,” he added.

He also praised late Shiroor seer for his people- friendly attitude. “He was pro-poor and always mingled with people. He liked art music and cultural activities very much. He nurtured talents. Sometimes, people felt that he overindulged in these activities,” he said.

“We were always cooperative with him. But as he did not follow celibacy, we had some issues with him. He also drank liquor. He had relationship with two women. That disqualified him from offering pujas,” he informed.

“On the day he consumed food with children, it is said that he smelt liquor. But the allegations that we held secret meetings against him are untrue. We always respected him. We just wanted him to change his behaviour and make himself worthy of offering pujas to the idols,” Swamiji said.

    The most customary practice of most of the Indians is to present in loved ones in happiness or at least in demise.
    People travel from abroad to attend the funerals and rights of loved ones. But Swamiji absence and wage reasons justify it but rather raises more suspicious.

    When it comes to the death Shiroor Seer, Pejwar Swamiji should have set aside the programmes and can even be rescheduled.

    Shiroor seer’s don't deserve dead before his age.

    its sad people of Udupi witnessed a very bad incident in the history of Udupi. previously there might be swamijis of negative behavior. those days no electronic media. it was not video recorded , exposure was not there. People of Udupi know everything. presently also what is happening in car street everybody knows.
    At least here after Swamiji's should keep the negative elements away. he was not mingling with people of Udupi. he was with only the negative people. they recorded everything without his knowledge. He was supporting anti social elements. people were enchaining him. they even finished property's belongs to the mutt. they made him bankrupt.
    its lesson for all swamijis who do Sanmana to anti social elements to keep them away. no doubt these days these elements have become highly respected in society with the patronage of these swamijis. hope they learn the lesson early & keep these elements & their money away from the car street.

    @Shetty,
    Both type of people exist. Who have never drunk or who find reasons to drink. But the former are faithful.

    @Truth teller,

    I think you took my query in wrong sense.
    It was evident from the statement of Pejavar swami that drinking is not expected from Shiroor Swami. So Actually I wanted to know if it is banned in Hinduism for all the followers or is not allowed only for Swamis.

    Regarding your question, we believe Quran is revelation from God on Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him). And Quran prohibits consumption of liquor for all of its followers.

    The Quran says: "They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, "In them is great sin and [yet, some] benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit." And they ask you what they should spend. Say, "The excess [beyond needs]." Thus Allah makes clear to you the verses [of revelation] that you might give thought."

    Further, liquor banned countries are peaceful than those where it is not banned; if liquor consumption is considered as the only criteria that decides the extent of peace in that country. But, banning of liquor is not the only criteria that decides the peace in a given country.

    Liquor consumption is prohibited for all madhva sanyasi and most brahmin priests. Intoxication is not considered desirable by many sanyasis as they are supposed to give up all pleasures of life including sex and family ties. However Hinduism is a term that comprises all native religious traditions of India. Therefore there is no hard and fast rule about this among most ordinary Hindus. Even if you drink liquor it does not constitute a great sin among ordinary Hindus.

    Excuse me. There was a mistake in translation of the verses of the Quran. The correct translation is-

    "They ask you (O Muhammad)(Peace be upon Him) concerning alcoholic drink and gambling. Say: " In them is a great sin, and (Some) benefits for men, but sin of them is greater than their benefit. " And They ask you what they ought to spend. Say: "That which is beyond your needs." Thus Allah makes clear to you His Laws in order that you may give thought. ( The Quran, 2:219)

    On what basis is the pejawar swamiar making these allegations? There are lot of things said about lot of other seers as well. I think it is important now that in the interest of the 8 mutts some changes be made about appointing the next swamiar. Please don't give deeksha to children under 18 as they will not understand the celibacy vows. Also it is important that swamiar engage more with non tulu brahmin Hindus. Most donations to udupi mutts come from non tulu brahmin Hindus and if mismanagement continues then it won't stop the government from taking over the mutts.

    But as he did not follow celibacy, we had some issues with him. He also drank liquor. He had a relationship with two women. That disqualified him from offering pujas,”

    Man disqualifies a man from offering pujas to gods because he did follow man-made rules. Now this God is locked up.

    Once upon a time, God protected Man,
    now a man is locking up God and prohibiting him from being worshiped.

    @Tom cat mangalore,of course rules are all man made .Even when man made rules have to be followed.Everybody cannot dance as they want.In Math too they have to follow them,otherwise there is no need of living in this community.They have to stepout if it doesnt pass.Here we believe Pejawar swamijiis explanation.Most probably deceased swami when he drank something ,was a trank not to be.who knows ,he drank thinking it is liquier (Sorry for the explanation)or soft drink,and wrong drink was in bottle?It was his fate?God knows who and why it happened with him.Here was nothing with his character to do,but only mistaken drink with or without his knowledge.Thatswhat I think .RIP
