Mangaluru Jul 21: Renowned consultant, Pediatrician and neonatologist Dr Nischal Rao spoke on the topic of 'Crisis Resource Management' at KMC hospital in the city on Friday, July 20. Nischal Rao is an expert in neurodevelopment and resuscitation, Whittington Hospital and clinical lecturer, university college hospital, London.

"Whenever you start off your work remember to have a checklist to avoid human errors. Human errors also happen with health care setup and we need to understand the human factor. To reduce the human errors, you need to run simulation exercise every day,” Dr Nischal Rao said.

"Designate leadership. In a crunch situation, a true leader will step back and ask who can handle the situation. It is called a dynamic leadership. In some scenarios, even nurse can be a leader. It is not necessary that every time a senior most person has to be the leader in a crunch situation,” he added.

"Anticipate things on what can be done in a crucial situation. If you feel heavy bleeding will occur during a surgery, arrange for the blood in advance. Know the environment very well before starting your work. In some situation, I have felt that I have lost control. But we don't express it loudly. We need to mobilize the resource properly,” he advised.

"When the work begins, communicate properly and assign the duties to the concerned person. This will distribute and reduce your workload." he informed.

Prior to the programme, speaking to media, Dr Nischal Rao said, "I feel really proud to be an alumnus of KMC Manipal and am grateful to the government and their efforts to provide such a quality education in Manipal which made us grow,”

When asked about saving a child at Whittington hospital in London, Dr Nischal Rao said, "That child was not breathing. I was a neonatologist in the very same hospital. Everyone thought that the newborn baby was no more. I provided essential emergency treatment to the newborn and then the baby started to breathe and now is in a healthy condition,"

"We will give training to nurses at KMC in Mangaluru and Manipal to deal such situations and to be mentally prepared in emergency," he added.

Medical superintendent of KMC Mangaluru, Dr Anand Venugopal and head of the department of paediatrics, Dr Kamalakshi Bhat were present.

Your message is loud and clear, Dr. Nischal Rao. India is a Nation of Mahatma Gandhi and Saint Mother Theresa. We have to find ways and means to display our healthy leadership and healthy life in order to teach our new generation the true meaning of Peaceful Co-existence. We have to find ways and means to provide affordable and deserving medical service to all our Citizens. First and for most each one is leader to one's life. Each one should manage one's life with self help from the beginning of one's conscious state. Basic foundation for leadership must start from the beginning of one's life. We each one should learn to take responsibility for one's life as early as possible. Family also responsible for one's leadership.
Of course there are stratus in leadership but it is important to cultivate as many as possible qualities of leadership. Healthy leadership leads to healthy life. When each one leads a healthy life society becomes healthy.
But at present unhealthy rowdism, terrorism growing in an alarming speed. It is not a healthy sign of leadership. Negative leadership for the selfish motives really a curse for society.
Real leader sacrifices life & resources for others. Real leader gives unselfish service.
    Society needs unselfish leaders.
Thank you and God bless each and every one of us.
