Udupi: Saudi citizen’s harassment prompted Hazel Mathias to end her life?

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Aug 6: Important information has been unearthed in the mysterious death of Hazel Jyotsna Mathias, a nurse from Shirva, who died on July 19 in her residential quarters in the Al Miqua government hospital of Saudi Arabia.

According to the preliminary investigation by the Saudi police, it is evident that Hazel hung herself from a rod that was outside her room in the quarters due to the relentless harassment of a Saudi citizen.

The Saudi police have collected all related evidence and witnesses in this regards. It is learnt that the said Saudi citizen has been taken into custody and interrogated. However, the Saudi administration has not passed on any information in this regard to the family members of Hazel.

Death note reveals the truth

It is said that Hazel has clearly mentioned in the death note which she has written in both English as well as Konkani languages about the harassment meted out to her by the Saudi citizen. The Saudi police have got the Konkani part of the letter translated into English as well as Arabic languages and after going through the same, the letter is kept in a sealed envelope. Based on this letter and also other circumstantial pieces of evidence, it is said that the police have arrested the culprit.

It is also learnt that the possibility of repatriating the body to India in the near future is slim as the police have to complete their investigation, submit the report and the court has to give the final verdict.

"There is information that Hazel has died because of the harassment of a Saudi citizen. The Saudi police have to conduct a thorough investigation in this regard. The central government has to urge the Saudi government in this regard. International human rights associations have to raise their voice about this issue. Hazel should get justice at least now. Culprits should get punishment. I have urged the Indian Consulate in this regard," said Ivan D'Souza, MLC.

Who has read the 2 notes written by her. Is it made public. Not even Indian Consulate has given the copy. Court has not given its verdict, as they will refer to the expertise services.

If she has written 2 notes in English and Konkani. At least one note she could have taken snap from her mobile and could have sent to at least one or few of her friends/relatives. This leads to the suspicion to, to many questions.

Many issues are not for discussion, in public domain. For me, her death is , death under mysterious circumstances.

Housemaids or domestic servants are the most helpless, vulnerable victims of employers’ abuses and atrocities especially in Saudi & Kuwait. They are always confined to four walls with no access to the outside world. Many are compelled to suffer silently with nobody around to share their woes, sacrificing for the sake of their loved ones back home. Despite all sufferings they carry on with the hope of living a dignified life in their native places. A few of them manage to escape and take shelter in their countries’ embassies partly helped by charitable social organizations. Yet some among them end up in jail on false charges and finally get deported.

But it is very rare among qualified professionals like a nurse taking such a dreadful step for reasons of harassment, when she had the freedom and options to resign or to file complaint with the high authorities or share her grievances with her colleagues, friends and family. This is the second sad and unfortunate tragedy involving nurses of the district working abroad.

    Cynthi,

In gulf countries there is minimum salary requirement for family visa...most Indian workers don't have that salary to obtain family visa and bring their families...

Most Indian families both husband and wife work to support the families in Gulf...

Gulf salaries for Indian expatriates have not increased substantially since last few decades unlike in India...

I agree with you living with spouse or family, always ideal, be in India or Gulf or anywhere else...otherwise there are always wicked people trying to take advantage of the situation...like parasites...

Unfortunately most middle class people unfortunately cant afford it...its sad and unfortunate...

There is ample harassment when you work in a gulf country. While saudi citizen is the culprit in this case, in majority of the cases it is the co-workers from Kerala, Andra, Pakistan, Palestine and Algeria who are involved in harassing people from other communities. Religion is also used for blackmailing and harassing other people. Philippinos and British are two communities who convert for the sake of money and marriage.

Its easy to say, she died. She did not die but killed herself. Its the worries and depression caused her to take this step. Though many Indian nurses, work abroad as nurses and remain in sharing accommodation, there is an urgent need to understand and implement. That is they all should believe they are from the same country and live as friends. This makes their relationship better and surely able to share their issues with others. Here then you get some kind of worthy advise which can make the victim to think widely and take the stand rightly.

My request to all those go for work abroad, try to share your issues with your close friends or someone in your families who can help you to deal with. Life is given by God and please do not take it in your hands. Always pray to God to give you wisdom and help you always. There are dependents left back in your homeland. So take care. God bless.

I can say, her death is under mysterious circumstances. Her notes, one can call is as suicide note, both in Konkani and English might be, explaining the prevailing situation happening to her.

Why just before few hours she had called her father and relatives. if she was ok, during that call, why suddenly within 4 hours, her life ended. This is the big question mark.

Report may or may not say, it is suicide but for sure, her death is under mysterious circumstances.

Most of them here try to become James Bond by guessing many unknown things. Even some one suggesting that she should have worked in India instead going to Saudi? Dear Questioner, this question you should have asked our great Modiji instead of victim. No one leave their home country other than some reason it might be personal or financial or anything. By the way there are many Indian suicide all over world but when it's in Saudi, people are on phobia to blame this country's system. Have ever questioned our own Indian judicial system? how many suicide cases are properly investigated and victim got justice????? instead of blaming others, let's fix our own and let Saudi govt do their job and let's pray for the victim's soul.

Reading your comments on this sensitive issue can understand the kind of mindset you have on people working in gulf. As some one has mentioned your stomach may be either full or you may be working hard in running the business you inherited from your ancestors and may not be knowing the pain one has to go through to find a decent job in India, unless one has connections at all levels or have the money to pay bribes. , or have extraordinary talent like you .
What hard work you are talking about.....grow bananas / vegetables and traders in Karkala market buy them for Rs. 12-15/Kg and then sell them at Rs. 60-80 Kg., or else work in the town / shops as a daily wager from 09.00 - 20.00 hrs for pittance of Rs. 150/day. Can you please elaborate here whom you have helped in securing a good job outside your community. What's your problem if some one wants to go to gulf or any other country he/she likes. First please call back all those who are working in the gulf countries or Europe / US/Canada /Australia etc., from your community and ask them to work hard like you here in Karkala /India.
"Money is not everything"......yes you are right and fully agree with you....but if you have enough of it to live a decent life . Everybody is not born lucky in this world Prabhu Maam.............some have to work and slog like slaves to get the basic necessities of life.

I know you you are talking about Saudi law. Still I maintain my stand that David is lying.
If you also say that for adultery, women are stoned to death and men get only lashes then give me at least 1 example in the history of Saudi. You will not get it.
Forget about partiality, give me at least 1 case where a woman is stoned to death in Saudi.
But there is a law in Saudi that if you try to tarnish the image of a woman by falsely implicating her of bad character, and if you fail to prove that, you will get lashes for sure. I think 80 lashes.

I suspect the Saudi Citizens might have planned to convert Hazel to Islam.

There are many cases in KSA harassing at job place or giving work load if not converting to Islam.

I have a Filipino Friend Born Again Christian who was a Polite person at work.
He trained a Saudi well for his Soft Ware Job and the Saudi asked the Filipino to convert to Islam and when he refused, he started giving troubles and work load to him.

In Saudi 90 percent of Saudi Citizens think if they convert a person they will have heaven after erasing their blunders of sins committed against humanity.

as it is govt. hospital, he might be from local family, So they are hiding the evidences of death. Why they took these many days to reveal the suicide note? are they preparing to copy handwriting? Why cant they handover the body to Indian officials or family? I think this is a clear cut murder from someone from ruling family and now they are trying to create the suicide angle. As an expat I can guarantee that nobody would decide to die in foreign soil. As after the Air India Express tragedy I was travelling in the same flight, someone asked me Air India is not safe, are you not afraid to travel, I replied whatever even If I die I would die in India not here. So its fine. This case should be investigated properly. Its the responsibility of our Embassy.

They do not know how to help or discuss happy and sad moments with others. Their thought is happy family means sit in the car inside compound, go for shoping on weekends, dinner&partys on malls and come back inside compound. In these type they do not want to talk with others also. Very very bad condition of soceity.
