Fuel prices on upward swing, opposition parties maintain profound silence

Opposition has failed miserably to protest over fuel hike

Stany Bela

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Sep 5: The constant hike in petrol, diesel and gold prices in India are burning holes in a common man’s pocket. While the union government blames rise in global oil prices as the main reason, analysts comment that the hike is aimed at supporting the petroleum companies.

Since August 16, petrol prices have risen by over Rs 2 per litre while diesel has recorded hike of Rs 2.42 a litre during this period. The latest rise of 16 paise made petrol cost Rs 79.31 in Delhi, while diesel touched Rs 71.34 with the latest increase of 19 paise per litre.

Justifying the record breaking hike, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan has said the rise in fuel prices in the country was ‘temporary,’ and a result of rise in global crude oil prices. But the people, who are aware of international crude oil market, claim that the Union Minister is fooling the people with false and narrow statements and indirectly supporting the petroleum companies for price hike.

BJP workers protesting over LPG hike while in opposition

In social media and other web platforms, the experts are trying to expose the ‘daylight robbery’ by petroleum companies and the government’s failure on curbing the price hike and the reality of global fuel market.

Meanwhile, most of the Indians have arrived at an opinion that ‘government has failed to control the fuel prices.’ But apart from that, along with experts, entire country is wondering why the opposition has maintained silence.

From January 2018 onwards, fuel prices have been hiked continuously. At time of Karnataka Assembly elections, government curbed the price hike for a short period purely with the intention of political gain. Immediately after the election, government allowed fuel companies to increase the prices. Since August 24, prices have been hiked continuously for 10 consecutive days. Still the opposition parties of the country are in coma and have not come to the common man’s rescue who is suffering due to price hike.

Recalling the fuel price hike at the time of UPA government and the opposition’s agitations, experts ask “haven’t opposition parties learnt lessons from the way BJP hit the streets at every opportunity prior to 2014. Don’t they remember how BJP leaders from booth level to nation’s capital organised protests and opposed price hikes?”

“Opposition parties have completely forgotten their duty and responsibility. The continuous fuel price hike is making people suffer in all ways. Government is completely supporting petroleum companies. The silence maintained by the opposition raises suspicion that even they are receiving a share and are benefitting with the price hike,” says Anup a grocery owner of Mangaluru.

Recalling the BJP agitation at the term of UPA rule, Renuka, a house wife from Puttur has posted on her Facebook wall “When Manmohan Singh led government increased a paisa for fuel twice in a year, the BJP workers came to streets and projected it as the failure of the government. Many BJP leaders led the protest rallies by using bullock carts. Their women leaders sat on roads with empty gas cylinders. Apart from their political agenda by protests, they succeeded to put a pressure on government to re-think the price hikes many times. They made people believe that they are with them. Now same party is in power, but can’t stop the price hike. But it is great tragedy that our opposition is not at all bothered about people’s issues. If few leaders sit in media rooms and talk something, they believe they have done their duty,”

“Petrol, diesel and gas prices are hitting all time high. Why are opposition parties not hitting the streets? What are they waiting for,” tweets Yashwant Sinha, Former BJP leader.

“Where is the opposition? Why aren’t they protesting on streets? It’s a year or may be just few months to go for elections. India is imploding due to unemployment, communal divide, high petrol and food prices, mismanagement of economy, corruption, and lynching incidents. What’s stopping them?” tweets Nikhil, an Indian who resides at Sydney.

Not raising voice against the major faults of government like continuous price hikes of fuel and gas, Congress party is showing that it will not come to the help of common people. It has already lost the space in the hearts of people of India. It’s surviving only on the names of Nehru, Indira and Rajiv Gandhi. By sitting quite on major issues it seems that it has lost its credibility in society. The same applies to other opposition parties as well.

If someone says opposition has agenda or it will bounce back, this is the best time for them. The daily hike on fuel price has given them a golden opportunity to speak on behalf of common people and to get a grip on pan-Indian issues.

Indian opposition has lost the opportunity to take up national issues for a long time now due to its own faults and wrong strategies. The current situation should be a wakeup call.

Let us hope that people become educated, realise the ground reality because they can not fool themselves anymore as they are the ones filling their stomachs and the so called patriotic party does not pay for their food and livelihood or in fact is robbing of their precious, hard earned, sweat and blood toiled meager earning go up in thin air as the Rupee goes to 72 from about 44 approximately 7 years ago when moun mohan quiet sing who did not speak ran the country. if in 2019 elections unwanted corrupt party who ran this great nation for 70 years looting itself comes back to power..... we will see on the 2nd day of losing power all the RATS that are hiding in this critical time when the country and its poor and middle class are systematically looted of their only earning in FD / little savings in Rs. / small investments in Rs. all turn to nothing as Rupee is robbed of its value against the $. is it because the Great Bhais have taken the Rupee and converted it into $ ?? what have we done wrong? is it the reward for us for not being patriotic ?? Is it our mistake that we did not run away or deposit our little life savings in $ outside our land unlike the patriots ??
yes no sooner these patriots lose power will they sit on streets and blow their trumpet again,,,,
you will see them with empty gas cylinders along with their FAKE DEGREES, FAKE FACES, FAKE LOGICS and FAKE LIVES to fool the people to grab power again....

An RTI reply has revealed that the Modi government is selling diesel for ₹34 per litre and petrol for ₹37 per litre to other countries whereas in India the price is high.

The "fuel loot" had resulted in the Modi government profiting ₹11 lakh crore. In May 2014, he said, the excise duty on petrol was ₹9 per litre, while today it is ₹19 per litre. "Similarly, the excise duty on diesel in 2014 was ₹3 and today it is around ₹15.”

Why PM Modi BJP government not bringing petrol and diesel under GST will alone give a relief to common people by ₹ 10-15 per litre?

By increasing fuel prices, the Modi government has collected ₹11 lakh crore. Where has this huge money gone?

It is not always the job of opposition parties to put together an agitation over every such issues. On fuel prices, opposition time and again voiced their concerns even in streets, however, common man who is the actual victim of such price rise, still remains illusive and pretends to be all is fine. The middle class wants someone to fight for them, while they sit pretty at their homes.

Opposition parties sensing the middle class anger not getting converted to votes for them, are not taking it up, with higher interest. Further, opposition currently not getting sufficient air time in TV Channels. It is a right strategy for the opposition.

I support the Opposition for not protesting against the PRICE RISE, because it the people who voted MODI to power should come out on streets and protest, why blame the Opposition, they were sent home right?
If opposition protests, dese fool Modi bhakts will say "Gandhis are not allowing der PM Modi to do his work, dey oppose everything", so its better not to oppose, Because People should get the Burn of Prise Rise, they are the one who elected MODI, who crashed the INDIAN Economy & did harm to all working class people, businesses.
A chai wala cannot know the Economics, Only a Economist can.

Just two days ago BJP's greatest economist ever, and hero/role model of bhakths in an interview openly said that ' Anything more than Rs 48 a liter of petrol is exploitation'.
Hope bhakths now are convinced of the fact they are being exploited by the government they adore as the accusation is from none other than their own role model.

Look at the kaam wali Bai. What did she even think in 2014, when the party won, no education and no experience and will run the country. Citizens of INDIA sometimes don't believe in themselves to start their own business in spite of being educated and we have handed over a great country like ours in the hands of these people. No religious angle, please.

Shall we start a parallel agitation, Increase the rates for food items.

Without food, we all can survive, but petrol, diesel and cooking gas is a must. Because, all items are purchased by restaurants and hotels, we pay the bill along with his 300% profits.
Food we buy for survival unlike fuel, we pay even when we travel for pleasure.

we are paying more for Rafale and dollar also.

    really injustice.
only solution, pay more for Tur dall, atleast Rs500 per kg
