Mangalore: District BJP Leaders Want Private Buses to Stay

The Hindu

MANGALORE, Nov 10: Dakshina Kannada unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wants the Government to introduce city buses of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) here in a phased manner. With this, it has contradicted the statement of V. Dhananjaya Kumar, former MP and spokesperson of the State unit of the BJP, that there was no need for KSRTC to start city bus service in Mangalore.

K. Monappa Bhandary, president of the district unit of the BJP, told The Hindu here on Sunday that private buses too could stay in the city. There should be both KSRTC and private city bus services. With this, there would be a healthy competition between the two, he added.

Bhandary said that the office-bearers of the district unit, who met here on Saturday, discussed this subject. They felt that if private buses were removed immediately, it would create problems for people. The KSRTC would not be able to provide efficient services to people, instantly. However, it could start operating, they said.

“Let the KSRTC introduce its buses in a phased manner. People will decide whether private operators or the KSRTC should stay,” Bhandary said.

Asked if private operators should withdraw same number of buses as being introduced by the KSRTC, he said that there was no such need. The KSRTC buses could be introduced in addition to the private buses. Refuting the view that such a move might add to the traffic congestion as unfounded, he said that the roads were being converted into four-lane concrete ones in the prime areas of the city.

Bhandary said that if private buses were removed suddenly, the Government should have to look into issues related to the livelihood of drivers, conductors and other workers, who were employed by private operators.

J. Krishna Palemar, Minister in-charge of Dakshina Kannada, had told presspersons here on Friday that private and KSRTC city buses could be operated simultaneously. D.V. Sadananda Gowda, president, State unit of the BJP, had expressed similar view while addressing presspersons at Puttur on Friday.

Bus owners’ opposition

Dakshina Kannada Bus Owners’ Association has opposed the Government’s proposal to introduce government buses on highway routes by banning private buses.

The association has also opposed the government’s plans to introduce Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses in the city.

In a press release, its general secretary Aziz Parthipady said that the ban would deprive many employees such as drivers, conductors, and cleaners off their livelihood. Private buses in Dakshina Kannada started operating 75 years ago. Hence there was a strong bond between the people and private buses in the district. The ban would also affect the livelihood of bus-owners.

The association was providing passes to students at reduced rates. Private operators were plying buses to many villages in the district.

After the beedi industry collapsed in the district, many people lost their jobs and if private buses were also banned, it would affect the life of several families, Parthipady said.

This is a welcome move. This should have been done much earlier. On the negative side would the KSRTC buses be kept clean? These buses were primarily plying for the benefit of owners and passengers were treated like untouchables of the bygone era. The term SERVICE was non-existent.

Comofrt of the passenger was totally absent still people used because they had to use in the absence of alternative arrangemnent. I do not believe there was any such thing called BOND existed between the buses and the commuters. Well done government.

Let us not worry about who wants to bring this change BJP OR CONGRESS, Let us study the situation as such. Is the present city bus services are not good? Is KSRTC is the right replacement? What will be the alternative solutins for Private bus owners, their investments, bank loans etc.

What will be the fate of these drivers, conductors, cleaners, mechanics, w/shops all related people. If government having solutions for all these above expected problems one can think to adjust with this decision.. otherwise this rule will come as KSRTC TSUNAMI, on MANGLORIANS.

The move to introduce KSRTC buses is WELCOME. Private buses should be phased out in Phases. At present the private buses operate as they like inspite of the rules and regulations. They are not on time, Competition, dont ply up to designated destination (cut the route short) these all create lots of problems to the common people. KSRTC will not be a driverless transport.

Drivers and conductors are nequired. The present private bus drivers and conductors should be recruited.(Reservation and Quota should not be applicable)Like the Konkan Railway create a seperate entity to run and manage the public transport under the supervision of the Government. Instead of opposing all join hands and implement in the interest of the Common People

District bjp leaders want private buses to stay, where? in the garage or on the road. Now itself if you observe the traffic, it is damn worst-people do not have proper place to stand on, difficult to cross the road and if it is emergency, then god only save us. In this situation, politicians are playing with the words. If the bus operators feel that their drivers and conductors lose jobs who provided yeomen service, then it is good time for the govt to absorb these people and can earn respectable salary when compared to private salary and moreover save them from all sorts of harrassment. As i read from the news that 18000 vacancies could be created,so why not our own local people try for this. if this is the case, how many drivers etc., will stay with the private operators.

The private operators those who have more than 2 buses, can give away the permit of other buses in the name of service. How many operators will accept my formula? Because in one of my oberservations, i said that undivided DK district bus operators are very rich community and very very powerful.....rest is history (75 years experience...)

With the progressive development of the city, changes in the life style of Mangaloreans are inevitble. One of them is the familiar way, we are accustomed to see our local transport. KSRTC will take over this sector if not today, definItely by tomorrow. Keeping the usual political drama out, and the emmotional issues in the corner, and looking purely at the future interests of the city , it is time for the Mangaloreans to think the Metro way.

At this juncture it may not be worthwile to weigh the pros and cons of Private vs the Govt buses, since niether the private nor the KSRTC can win a landside victory in the contest to know who is better than the other. The important concern should be, to see the uninterupted employmnt of the existing private transport staff during the transition. When the time comes for the KSRTC buses to ply the mangalore roads, though it may not be to every one`s liking, yet we have to accept it in the unforgetable words of Hemacharya, with a pinch of salt

The Government should concentrate on providing basic civic amenities to the public first, before putting its hand into transport or any other businesses. BJP - Please provide us with good roads, clean water, uninterrupted power, proper health facilities, good education, and above all security and human rights. Everyone including me had mistakenly hoped that BJP government would be different! And different they are as they have totally forgotten their core responsibilities and want to get into business of making money for themselves

Raymond is correct!! We can have bus services that match the common mans mandate. Afterall the service is for the common man and the netas who travel by car and chopper cannot know whats best for us. Agreed many private bus drivers and conductors are arrogant people and there are a lot of complaints regarding thier behavior with the passengers and people on the road alike. But the best thing to do is to make them understand thier job roles properly and have a strict code of conduct for them.

We have a very much established network of private buses. It will take a lot of time for KSRTC to match the type of service the private buses offer. The best thing would be to improvise on the services available right now and I will not be surprised by having strict rules in place, we will have the best city transportation. But still its better to have peoples mandate on this.

You are right Mr.Jagannath Rai. This is just a political gimmick, Govt.will not ban private buses in M'lore. It is impossible to ban private buses in a city like Mangalore and surroundings where full of private busses are running since very long and most of the owners of private buses are under the influence of politicians and local goondas who controls the day-to-day running affairs of the private buses in D.K.

Since so many decades we the citizens of undivided Dakshina Kannada District are utilising the benefits of these private buses wich are giving the best services compared to the government buses. I have experienced this for 3 years when i was travelling from Udupi to Mangalore in private buses and from Mangalore to Bantwal in government buses.

Private buses are the best in all respects, like design of the bus, time maintenance, service of the drivers and conducters, humanity, facilities like giving additional stop for the elders and senior citizens, etc. I dont know why this new change. Also, when i travel in KSRTC buses, the conductors and dirvers make us to feel as if we are travelling for free. As if they are taking us for free of cost, or they are spending money on us. This is my own experience. Their behaviour, attitude is so arrogant which made me to argue many times. I had been to so many districts so many times throughout Karnataka, and i have found (realised 108%) that the bus service and facility provided by our undivided Dakshina Kannada District is far better than other districts.

Also, Dakshina Kannada Bus Association has proved as Role Model to other district Bus Associations. We wish the private buses will continue their trips along NH 17 so that we can enjoy the journey and feel more comfortable than the government buses.

The government should allow private operators to operate along with government buses. The customers will benefit since both private and public transporters will try to improve their service standards and the passenger will have the option to the operator based on their experience. The monopoly to Govt operator will harm the general public as it was the case earlier as experienced by people travelling to Uppinaganidi, Belthangady etc when there were no private operators. Thanks to Ramanatha Rai private buses in this route flying in these roads and people are happy with their service. If Mangalore roads are overcrowded its not because of the private buses, its because of the number of people using private vehicles flying on the roads.

The number of poople who are using the public transport is dwindling day by day thanks to affordability offered by Indian auto manufacturers and increasing living standards of Mangaloreans. The arrival of Nano and other cheaper cars will make the situation more worse. Instead of worrying about the crowded roads the goverment should take steps to ease traffic by developing infrastructure through better roads and traffic management systems.

Futher the government should ensure that there is no concentration of growth in certain areas. The best option is to move the administrative services to out of the city area to reduce the vehicular traffic coming to the city.

Somebody should stop the AGGRESSIVE DRIVING HABITS of private/express bus drivers in DK dist. Already these people have claimed 100s of lives. I dont mind having KSRTC if the roads become safer driving on a road which has dangerous Mangalore- Udupi express bus.

Hello, why there is so much of hue & cry about the Drivers, Conductors, cleaners..of the Private Buses losing the job???!!!. If Govt. wants to introduce their buses why don't they take all these people. To run the buses they too need Drivers, Conductors .... Instead of creating more problems, it's better for all the concerned party's to sit together & sort-out this in the better interst of all - Govt, Public, Workers. I have seen lots of people blowing up the unwanted, unrealistic issues... NO ONE IS BOTHERED/WORRIED ABOUT THE CORRUPTION GOING ON IN DK & STATE !!!!!!!! WILL PEOPLE COME OUT & SAY NO TO CORRUPTION.

The reason for banning of private buses on highways was to reduce the number of buses plying on the roads now if the KSRTC & private buses run simultaneously then the private commuter should take an appointment to run their vehicles on roads. Increase in more buses will cause more competitions and chances of more accidents.
