Mangalore: Eco Club Conference at Pilikula Attracts 2000 Students

Mangalore, Dec 11: Over 2,000 children from 150 high schools of the coastal districts of the state turned up for a two-day eco club members’ conference at the Pilikula Nisargadhama Amphitheatre here on Thursday December 11.
The event was organized by Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) and Karnataka Urban Development and Coastal Environment Management Project (KUDCEMP), in association with Pilikula Regional Science Centre Society.
Addressing the club members after inaugurating the conference, Dr Chandrashekar Chowta, president, Samriddhi, Manjeshwar, said it was time to think about the environment. It is the bounden duty of every human being to protect it, he emphasized.
“Every bio-species has the right to live on this earth. There are possibilities that many species have vanished over the past years. There is also concern that many endangered species in the Western Ghat region will soon become extinct”, he opined.
Saying that man has exploited the earth intensively for the past 250 years, Chowta said encroachment of the environment should be stopped for the survival of mankind itself. He also said that a study is being conducted on endangered species in the Western Ghats in order to protect them.
Deputy commissioner Maheshwara Rao, J R Lobo, director, KUIDFC-KUDCEMP, Dr K V Rao, director, Pilikula Regional Science Centre Society, and Kamalakar Halambi were also present. MLA Abhayachandra Jain presided over the function.
Ujjwal Chabbi, a member of the eco club from St Michael Convent High School, Dandeli, says that it is essential to have awareness about the environment. “I have indulged in various environmental activities through the eco club in our school for the last two years. We have planted many saplings in and around our school and houses”, he claims.
Kathyayini Hegde, a student of class nine, PM High School, Ankola, said that she has planted more than five saplings this year. Expressing gratitude to the eco club, she says her knowledge about the environment has improved after joining the club last year. Seema Mascarenhas, also a class nine student of St Joseph High School, Kankanady, is confident about her knowledge of birds and animals. “Listing the birds and animals has improved my level of wisdom about the species on earth. We should protect the environment for our own survival”, she opines.
A wind turbine, models of steam energy conversion into electricity, hydro power project, street light with automatic switch-off, application of wood gas, water storage in desert, direct current generator fan and other science models were on display at the Science Centre.
