DK LS polls: Can Congress benefit from MP Nalin’s anti-incumbency?

Stany Bela

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Feb 9: The preparations for the 17th Lok Sabha elections have already begun. Along with political parties, the enthusiasts of politics and political analysts are engaging in their own calculations on possible candidates in the upcoming elections and on speculations on which party may win or lose.

In the case of Dakshina Kannada, the current political atmosphere indicates that the result will be unpredictable. BJP is holding Dakshina Kannada Lok Sabha seat from past 27 years. Even at the time of Congress party’s clean sweep in state elections, voters backed BJP in Lok Sabha. But this time BJP office itself is not confident over victory because of various reasons. At the same time there is a hope in Congress leaders that if their calculations work, they can put a barricade on BJP’s run.

Nalin Kumar, Mithun Rai, Ramanath Rai, J R Lobo

As a cadre party, it is not difficult for BJP to gain the votes of party workers and their supporters. But when it comes to public, the party is being forced to discuss the contributions of its candidate who secured back to back victories in last two terms. BJP party is well aware that there is nothing much to say about its MP’s contribution for the constituency.  Day by day, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel is failing to convince people about his work.

Pumpwell and Thokkottu flyovers are two major projects of Union government, for which MP Nalin Kumar Kateel is responsible for the implementation of the projects. However, the snail’s pace of the work and the failure of the MP to tackle the issue have put BJP in an embarrassing situation.

BJP is aware that the voters are fed up with the MP concerning these projects and that people are unhappy about the inefficiency of their MP.

Brijesh Chowta, Ivan D'Souza, B K Hariprasad, U K Monu

Apart from this, there is no other exclusive project brought by MP to the constituency and this has become another drawback for party leadership and workers. To cover up the failure of its MP, the party organised few beneficiary conferences in constituency which were also not up to the mark. Even in non-BJP constituencies, the same conferences are happening and it was alleged that the MP was trying to get credit on sanction of normal MP funds to the constituencies and general projects of Union government.

Despite the clean sweep in last state election, the breakdown within BJP and its leaders boosts the confidence of Congress and gives them hope. The close circles of Congress express their opinion that communal incidents that happened just before the state election paved way for defeat of their candidature. The MLAs of the party especially in Mangaluru South, Mangaluru North and Puttur concentrated on development and they succeeded to complete all the pending projects. Now Dakshina Kannada is turning towards becoming communal violence-free district and people who have strong feel in communal matters also want a peaceful life. As per Congress it is good sign for them and the party thinks development happened during the term of current MP will become major criterion deciding this election. In his consecutive two terms, Nalin Kumar did not succeed in fulfilling the promises of separate railway zone for Mangaluru, Plastic Park for district, expansion of runway at Mangaluru Airport and special agricultural zone. If people cast votes judging MP’s development work, then analysts predict that BJP will lose.

Former M P Janardhana Poojary

When it comes to party politics, similar to previous elections, this time also both parties have many ticket aspirants. The prominent leaders of both parties are engaged in ticket seeking drive. Few have formed their own groups within the party and are busy pressurizing party leadership indirectly through their supporters.

As per sources, despite being unhappy within the party, BJP district leadership has shown interest on Nalin Kumar Kateel contesting for another term. The sources within the party reveal that changing the candidate is equal to suicide because it may give speculation that party accepted the failure of its current MP. There is strong opposition on MP Nalin Kumar’s working style within the party and many have openly expressed it in party meetings too. However, BJP already has completed first round survey and almost decided to go with current candidate. It is also learnt that Capt Brijesh Chowta is in the waiting list, incase if any changes may happen at the last moment. Capt Brijesh is well educated man with lot of positive credentials and integrity. He is young too. People say he is accessible to any person any time. Some analysts say he has better charm compared to Nalin Kumar Kateel. Former MLC Monappa Bhandary is also one of the contendors from BJP.

When it comes to Congress there are many aspirants for the ticket. Leaders Ramanath Rai, Janardhana Poojary, BK Hariprasad , Mithun Rai, Ivan D Souza, U K Monu have already expressed their wish openly and said if high command gives green signal they are ready to contest. As per supporters of Ramanath Rai, this election will be held between Ramanath Rai and BJP.  In another side the supporters of Mithun Rai have started a social media campaign in favour of him. B K Hariprasad has also expressed his wish in the media stating that he is also in the race of getting ticket for election. It is not a secret that Ivan D’Souza has been heavily engaging himself to make it possible to contest in upcoming elections.

As per sources in his last visit to district, K C Venugopal, in-charge of state Congress strictly informed that high command will not tolerate any groupism and the leader who loves his party and society will only get the ticket. It is also learnt that he instructed to take benefit of current MP’s failure and gain victory in the constituency at any cost. Sources reveal that he also warned District Congress Committee and its leaders on the ‘fan following’ working style.

Many party workers and followers of Congress believe that J R Lobo and Vinay Kumar Sorake are more suitable candidates for Lok Sabha seat. But Vinay Kumar Sorake has already said that he will not contest in elections. At the same time, being a genuine politician, J R Lobo has not yet expressed his interest to contest the Lok Sabha. But there is a strong opinion within the party and among the voters that J R Lobo is the right candidate and his candidature will increase the chances of victory.

Lobo already has many developmental works in his account which he did when he was the MLA. After the clean sweep by BJP in state assembly elections, district Congress went into coma for some time. But despite defeat, Lobo only became voice of Congress in various issues and he was in the forefront in defending the party in district. Impressed by this, the state leadership had given hints on giving major responsibilities to Lobo.  Now the highly placed sources in Bengaluru say that party high command and state leadership may give ticket to Lobo for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The voters want an able and noble candidate, who can stop communal hatred and who can become a perfect voice in Delhi on behalf of them. Development will be major issue in this election and the voters of Dakshina Kannada, which is known for literacy, will definitely evaluate the services of their representatives. They will also have some expectations as to how they want their leader as their representative in Delhi.

They want a representative, who has a clear vision of development of the constituency and its people should be elected.

But when it came to voting , they looked at the bigger picture and voted against him. So , the current scenario or circumstances in the Cong party does not favor Mr. Lobo. He could not make it in the RS elections that too against an unheard new comer. I dont think its wise to field him and have him humiliated again. Like the opinion of most of the guys out here .Yes BJP has made strong inroads in DK and it will be tough for Cong to uproot them. In my opinion, from Congi , I would say Mithun is the best bet. Though victory is a far cry, at least he garners some respect since he is new and not tested. Modern voters , esp youngsters look for some change . They want someone more dynamic . BJP may be on their toes if Mithun is fielded. The rest of the Congis are veterans and sorry to say are losers . Their outdated tactics of 70s, 80s, 90s wont work any more to counter the BJP. The BJP on the other hand is on a safer wicket. They have a winning candidate Nalin or the new guy Brijesh too, is a safe bet. Most of the Kannadigas would just vote for BJP irrespective of who the leader is, with Modi in mind.

In my view one stumbling block for Congress in the veteran leader who consecutively failed to elect four times in a row. The other factor for Congress is the groups. The caste factor played an important role in giving tickets. Lastly, soft Hindutva of Congress and not dealing with the communal forces with an iron hand during its ruling.
All the above factors and weakness of Congress made Mangalore constituency BJP's stronghold in last 28 years.
If one carefully do the analysis BJP's contribution to Mangalore constituency is absolute 'zero' despite two of the regional leader's served as a minister in the central government.
The advantage of BJP to rise to power in the groundwork which it has given to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh caders. They have records of each house and voting pattern in their database. Moreover, they have blessings of religious head and industrialist to finance.
I think Mr. Rahul Gandhi of Congress has to do some big sacrifice if the party wants to come back to power. They need to identify candidate above the caste level but acceptable for Mangaloreans. As far as Congress campaigning in coma mode things will not be going to change. The Congress party must make RTI activist murder by NAMO Naresh. This will give the impact on the central leadership of BJP which it sells merchandise.
The Congress party would have never suffered if they pursued the case of NAMO Naresh in RTI murder case. If the party during its ruling would have done it the political fortune be different in Mangalore, Udupi, Chikmalgore, Uttar Kannada.
If Congress is suffering the losses because of its own mistakes which it doesn't want to rectify due to soft Hindutva approach of the regional leaders leaning towards RSS.
BJP has taken advantage without any developments.

People should give only one term to the representatives so they can realize the expectations of the people. In 2018, the assembly election showed the intelligence of the people of Dakshina Kannada. This time too people should do due diligence when they select the particular candidate without blindly voting for a particular party. The higher ups at these parties like the PM or the CM will not personally come and work for the development of that particular constituency. The people of DK should choose their representative correctly by doing adequate research so that they will work for the people and the constituency and not for the party lobbying or paying them. This time around there definitely needs to be a change. Please think about change and improvement of the constituency.

Certainly there would be no doubts on Modi performance , he internationally escalated india's reputation very well, strenghten indian millitants, put full stop for terrorism / bomb explosion across the india, given corruption free governance. I had discussed about this in my previous comments. There are many reasons for BJP winning from the last 28 years. Please note before i start i want to say that i'm neither a Congress suppourter nor BJP nor affiliated to any religious entities. I want my undivided district to have overall development with regards to infrastructure, employment etc etc. Congress started to lose ground in this constituency because they started to sildeline the Majority Community. There are many cases and this irked the Majority Community. They used to always say that they are Secular but actually they are Sikular. Moreover janardhan Poojary gave statements which irked the Billava community. Also in 1992 he spoke against Dharmadikari Veerendra Hegde. This gave BJP some inroads through RSS, Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat etc. I remember people openly saying not to vote for Congress due to their support to Minority community during communal violence etc though it was vice varsa. We all agree that our current MP has not done anything but as i told earlier he will win this election also. Only thing is that he won in the last election by 1.75 lakhs. He will win this time by 25k votes. It is not so easy to upseat him. People are not voting for him but they are voting for BJP since they feel Congress will sideline them as a whole. Many will not agree with this but THIS IS THE GROUND REALITY .
If Congress have to win this constituency then they have to make inroads to Majority community like Billavas, Bunts, Brahmins etc who are the Major vote shares for the BJP. This is lacking. Please note why did ramanath rai lose Bantwal. Everybody knows and even he knows. I always say to Congress leaders times have changed 20 years back you could have won easily but know people think twice before they vote. Also why was there a washout of Congress in the recent state election. Congress need to understand that just by saying secular they cannot win. They have to take all community together which is lacking.

Good to see your thoughts elaborated here.....however, mangloreans are truly smart when it comes to election as i observed.......media, campaigns etc. stays one side and target for voting stays on other....if its loksabha its central election and he/his party runs the country and same goes with state election...

On the contrary, municipality elections are local leader driven....People are smart, whatever projections, predicaments prevail they know whom to vote.....

In my opinion, inspite of incumbency, Nalin will win again as overall support Modi at the end.....Congress had its chances so far 70 years....Modi will get consecutive 2 or 3 terms...

I am not happy with Nalin's work.
But then, if my vote is going to make Modi PM again, i really dont care who is the candidate in mangalore.

After Srinivas Mallya, None of the MP's have ever made a difference to mangalore.

We want such a MP , that he can speak Hindi fluently and under stand the meaning of what others speak. And at the same time he must be very good in English. He must fully attend his constituency and available when there is no Parliament. He must give 100% attendance in Parliament.

JR Lobo or Mithun Rai should be the right candidate considering the vast experience plus popularity of Lobo's works. In case of Mithun he has a strong backing up of all classes and religions being a very approachable person, plus he was denied the Moodbidre ticket which he would have easily won last time. BJP in my honest opinion if really wants to win then a new candidate is the only option. Just to keep up the image that we won't accept our MPs failure can cost very dearly, better a new suitable option be thought of. Even school kids know that in the last 2 terms we haven't achieved much from our MP..

Irrespective of the candidate by INC & BJP ,twin district will be won by BJP due to the communal mindset of the people. So better for INC to give seat to JDS as it is already a forgone seat for Congress !!
Why simply leaders fight between themselves when majority of twin district people are already influenced by Modi & not the candidate itself 😀

Same thing was said of 3 northern Hindi heartland states recently, but the so called Modi wave failed miserably. Overconfident BJP think tank probably thought they could pull it off without tampering EVM. But for parliamentary polls, they will not take such a risk and in that sense you are right, even if a light pole is made to run, victory is guaranteed!
