Mangalore: 'Last Supper' Exhibition at Orchid Art Gallery Bridges Communal Divide

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (GA)

Mangalore, Apr 8: Lord's Last Supper, an exhibition of paintings on the occasion of the Holy week is on in the Orchid Art Gallery in the city. The show features 20 art works of 14 artists that depicts the Christ’s Last Supper in different ways, yet not deviating from the original theme. The exhibition held last year on the same theme was a grand success.  As always the life of Christ seems to have inspired thousands of artists throughout the times. Last supper picture ‘a must’ near the dining table in the Catholic homes has new artistic interpretation.

The painting depicting washing of the feet is by Wilson JP seems to show the central belief of Christianity-the virtue of humility is well depicted in the painting. Artist Wilson is known for minimal use of colours and for play of light and shade. The same artist has painted one more painting on Last Supper through geometrical forms. However, master work is by veteran artist Peter Lewis. Depicted on a large canvas of 4feet X 4 feet, the painting depicts Jesus in more divinity. His style is greatly influenced by world’s great painters in his learning years.  Besides, the artist is also known for painting different incidents of Christ’s life and basic Christian beliefs. Painting by Anil Devadiga more towards abstract is titled ‘Jesus+ Cross+ Nail’ signifying the importance suffering and teaching of Christ.  Another work by Syed Asif Ali looks more vivid and close to being real to the event and the technique of cubes is notable. Another painting by Rajendra Kedige depicts the Last Supper in glowing light and at the bottom the turmoil that is going on this earth.

The majority of the artists are Hindus and it is amazing to see non-Catholic interpret the Last Supper besides this exercise essentially bridging the communal divide. The artists participating in this exhibition are – Santhosh Andrade, Sameer Ali, Sapna Noronha, Dinesh Holla, Rajendra Kedige, Zena Colaco, Basavaraj Kutni, Wilson JP, Peter Lewis, Purushotham Adve, Jeevan AS, Syed Asif Ali and Anil Devadiga.

Fantastic job by the artists. We should do this for all festivals and religious occassions. Helps build a good bond. I agree with irene that the artists names could have been mentioned under the paintings. Maybe Daiji can help promote these local mangalorean artists works with a section where online buying can be done for their masterpieces.

Dear HM, Artsit communitty is a small one but small deed such as this one goes a long way in promoting harmony. Now it is last supper and some other time it is Ganesha exhibition. We have to keep our efforts on regardless of the fruit it bears because it is better to light a lamp than to curse the darkness.

The paintings on exhibition are good. But I do not understand how an Art Exhibition can bridge communal divide. To that matter along with Lords Last supper there should be paintings of Lord Ganesha too. All the Best.

Art and Music should live side by side. Both give peace of mind to any human being and there are no barriers of caste, creed or color for such lovers of Art and Music. One of the most famous subjects for any painter, 'The Last Supper' has been depicted by the artists in various styles and moods all over the world. Every bit of work is a masterpiece in its own ways. The exhibition at Orchid Art Gallery derives huge importance not only for its artistic purpose but also for bringing all like minded people under one umbrella. The organisers should hold such exhibitions on a regular basis with various topics while encouraging both new and old artists to come to the fore.

The outcome from the silence of hearts (of the painter) speaks to the lengths of miles! Hidden ansewrs are not revealed even to the artists! Who are we to limit them with our SO LIMITED words? Its only when one learns to paint...
