Mangalore, May 5: “Means should justify the ends”, the famous words of Gandhi has timeless value in our lives despite passage of time. Which means our actions should justify the end results of our actions.  A NGO which ventured into this Gandhian thought had a bitter lesson to learn when it’s good intentions went topsy-turvy resulting in embarrassment much to the amusement of those who witnessed it.  The scene that unfolded yesterday in the city was nothing short of any movie thriller of recent years comprising a deadly combination of adventure, thrill, suspense, action and melodrama.

A NGO which strives to bring alcoholics back into the mainstream of the society organized an Alcoholic Anonymous camp in the city yesterday.  It has been conducting such camps in various parts of the district from time to time.  They identify alcoholics based on the information provided by their family members without the knowledge of the alcoholics.  This is done in the good intention of bringing them back to the mainstream of the society by their family members who approach the NGO with correct information on the alcoholic person.

Similarly, based on the information available with them the NGO went to the houses and brought about 12 to 15 alcoholics from different parts of the to take them to the camp being held in the Government Primary High School in Pandeshwar.  These people who were already in an inebriated condition were put into a room and the door was bolted to ensure they don’t run away from there.

When the organizers got themselves busy with the other aspects of the camp this motley crowd ventured into action. They realized they were tricked into being brought to the camp and their inebriated minds worked quickly to find a way out of the impasse they found themselves in.   At least 7 to 8 of them climbed the roof of the school, removed the tiles and jumped away to freedom one by one.  Inspired by the adventure of these youngsters most of whom were in their early 30’s, a 45-year old man climbed the roof and jumped down only to break his leg.  His misadventure has landed him in the hospital where he is now recuperating cursing his fate and failed adventure.

Passers-by watched the drama that was unfolding with curiosity and anxiety.  No doubt the NGO was guided with the good intention of reforming these alcoholics.  But their efforts were nullified by the misadventure of the assorted crowd of alcoholics.

Alcoholics should be treated in the hospital with counseling and medication. Otherwise they will be back to the same. It is sad to see people in this situation.

It is pathetic some have lauded the quality of the pictures taken. Like Abdulla Madumoole said, this method of treating an alcoholic is appaling. AA does not function this way. Alcohol is powerful, cunning and baffling and unless one realizes the ills of excessive consumption of alcohol, this type of alcohol treatment will be futile. Social drinkers do not understand alcoholics and what trigers them to be such.

If alcohol is a disease,it is the only disease sold in the bottle, licensed to sell through outlets, brings revenue to the goverment !! Goverment should ban all the alcohols irrespective of price and kiks. But intresting is 1.5 crores worth alcohol were siezed by the police in shimoga a home town of CM during a recent L.S election.JAI HO !!

Your photos are as adventerous as the adventure of those heroes. There is no quickfix to bring the alcoholics back to the main stream. Indeed, End doesn''t justify the means. If it does, terrorism can also be justified.

No one should be forced to such camps. One should have a desire to stop drinking. Alcoholism is a disease and the alcoholic should be given aware of these things first rather than putting them behind doors and locking them up. Alcoholics are not bad people. They need love and true understanding.

I respect the views of Abdullah Madumoole expressed most of the time in Daiji world. But this time I disagree. If the NGOs are successful in their method with other people in the past then there is no harm in trying with more people.Even if they succeed in making few people alcoholic free, then I think they should be lauded and encouraged.Dayananda sab, why did you wait for the man to fall down? is it to take some sensational photos? Any how good Photos.Thnaks Daiji.

Very sad and quite interesting story. We all know the alcohol is a social evil, but unfortunately it is promoted clandistinely and bar owners/producers are respected and falicitated. Thats the sad part of the whole story.

There is a saying “you can take the horse to the river but you cannot make it drink water”. I think same is the case here. If these alcoholics are forcefully brought or brought tricked and kept under confinement, that too when they are under the control of alcohol, will they co-operate? Unless the affected person realizes that he has a problem and the problem needs to be attended, there is no point in trying to reform. The intention of the NGO is really commendable but the strategy adopted may not be correct. Everyone knows the evils of alcohol on our body, mind, soul and the society as a whole but still we do not do much to create an alcohol free society. My gut feeling is that we should put more effort to see that our younger generation doesn’t fall into the trap of alcohol than trying to reform the alcoholics. The irony of our system, not only in India but also worldwide, is that on one side, governments try to provide better health care services, educate the people about the negative effects of alcohol but at the same time on the other side they encourage more and more production of alcohol in different forms!!! When we look at these pictures, we feel they are funny and stuff for laughing, but I am sure that like me there are hundreds whose hearts bleed for these dipsomaniac brothers.
