Mangalore, May 19:
Mulihithlu area near Mangaladevi in the city has always been identified because of its historic importance. The area was witness to another historical occasion on Tuesday May 19, when Ronald Colaco, an NRI entrepreneur from Bangalore,  dedicated the 1,100 ft long road, duly asphalted with  interlock-rubberized pavements on both sides out of his personal contributions.

V Ponnuraj, deputy commissioner, dedicated the Tillery Road in Mulihithlu, a 1,100 feet long road that has been asphalted, duly equipped with interlock- rubberized pavements for the public use, in the presence of Alice Colaco, mother of Ronald Colaco and other guests.

After the dedication, V Ponnuraj hailed Ronald Colaco for taking the initiative of donating a road for the public use and said that by this act, Colaco has become a role model for the other citizens, inspiring them to do something for the society. "His donation really means what is democracy and shows what role a citizen can play in improving the lot of the people. Let us ask not what our country can do for us, let us ask what we can do for our country," he added.

Ronald Colaco handed over the dedication letter to Sameer Shukla, commissioner of Mangalore Cty Corporation. Titus Norohna read out the contents of the letter, before it was handed over.

Ronald Colaco said, he was driven by a desire and inspiration to work for the society in laying this road on his own. He explained that he decided to donate something for the society, after having a look at the problems of the people living in some areas and the lack of basic amenities there. He suggested to the city residents to take up the responsibility of keeping their areas clean. He also said that he has plans to extend assistance for maintaining the cleanliness of this area.

He also called upon the government and the representatives of the people, to work with political will to provide infrastructure facilities for the benefit of the people. He thanked all the members who helped him by working for this road.

Sameer Shukla, City Corporation commissioner said, Ronald Colaco has shown an example of finding happiness in making others comfortable.

Mayor Shankar Bhat said, the contribution made by Colaco exemplifies the real meaning of donation and the idea of giving something back to the society. Earning from the society and giving back to the society are the principles that we have inherited from our ancestors. But the people like Ronald Colaco alone can make such donations, by their strong will to do something for the society and also the will to give back to the society, he appreciated.

The mayor distributed the dust bins to the residents of Mulihithlu for keeping the area clean through proper waste management methods. The dust bins were symbolically presented to four residents. It was announced that every house in this area would be given a dustbin each.

V Ponnuraj, district deputy commissioner handed over a memento to Ronald Colaco as a token of respect and gratitude on behalf of the citizens. Local corporator Prema Muralidhar was also present.

Ex-corporator of the area Muralidhar proposed vote of thanks and journalist Manohar Prasad was the master of the ceremony.

Congratulations Mr. Colaco. It is proved that even when the Corporation was ruled for over 30 years by Congress, nothing good will happen. Are these politicians really having no shame at all to be sitting in the front row. Definitely it is the biggest insult to Mr. Ronald Colaco. All the work done philanthropically should not be hinted upon to any politician. this may again get diluted by these oppurtunistic day robbers sorry politicians of city corporation.

Firstly, I would like to thank Mr. Ronald Colaco for taking this initiative & dedicating the asphalted road out of his personal contributions. Regarding the quote in Mr. V Ponnuraj - deputy commissioner’s speech “Let us ask not what our country can do for us, let us ask what we can do for our country", I wish to comment that this quote sounds good in USA where there is considerable progress from both sides i.e. the government / politicians and people / citizens. I understand and totally agree Mr. Colaco has done a great job. Along with Mr. Colaco becoming a role model for the other citizens, inspiring them to do something for the society, this action of Mr. Colaco should also be a eye-opener to our Government, corporation, & politicians. Corporation should be ashamed of their selves while accepting the road developed by a citizen out of his personal contributions, because it clearly reflects that they are not doing their job. We are paying taxes … where does that go and why there is no improvement? Do they need the citizens to develop the city? Once again thanks to Mr. Ronald Colaco.

This is a real social work. Man serves for the society without any anticipation of honours. Karnataka Govt should recognise Mr Colaco and honour for the charity work he does in Bangalore & Mangalore. I pray to God to give him more strenght & prosperity and help more poor peoples and serve the society. May God bless him & his family.

Truly a good contribution by Mr. Ronald Colaco to the mulihitlu area pedestrains and a classic example to the society as to how we can play an important role in local development. But Citizens will definitely contribute in a big way only when our elected representatives will seriously involve themselves in improving the basic infrastructure of our cities/villages.

I live at Bondel and much appreciate the gesture of Mr Ronald Colaco. But I must mention that the family of Mr Pachanady Shankar Rao who bought from a private party a 14 ft breadth and nearly 400 ft stretch of land and built a road from the Pudushedde panchayat road to his property in the Corporation area and has given it free to the city- today it serves as the road for more than 40 houses and has opened up the area to road traffic-earlier people had to trudge on foot through a beaten path. We have to acknowledge them too. It is time that the Corporation makes a study of all these roads and gives credit to the families by naming the roads after the donors. This will make them proud that their gestures have been appreciated. Likewise where layouts are being constructed, roads could be named after donors who will agree to maintain it (except for asphalting) for a fixed period of time- say 10 years renewable the city will gain, the local residents should form a LOCAL AREA MANAGEMENT team and coordinate with the local corporator and the corporation. It is being done in our area and can be done all over the city- we have formed an association and we ensure the place is neat and clean. Let us make Mangalore green and clean.

This is a very unique gesture. Thanks Mr. Colaco for your noble thoughts and contribution to society. We hope that our newly- elected politicians will follow your example and one day our city will be a model for the rest of the country. Hope all the citizens of Mangalore will think likewise, and aim for development and prosperity for all.
