Panaji, Jun 5:
Goa police today initiated disciplinary inquiry against three policemen for allegedly dumping an ailing beggar in a garbage pile.

“The inquiry conducted by deputy superintendent of police Shamba Sawant has prima facie found three policemen including a head constable guilty. We have initiated disciplinary inquiry against them,” superintendent of police (intelligence) Atmaram Deshpande told reporters here.

Head constable P Mhamal, constable S Kudnekar and police control van driver Rajesh Tamse are found guilty in the inquiry.

The police earned ire when media carried a story about an ailing beggar who was dumped into a pile of garbage by the police control room (PCR) van which had picked him from the market area allegedly at the behest of a restaurant owner.

The beggar spent entire Tuesday night this week in the pile of garbage and crawled upto the compound of Young Men Christian Association’s (YMCA) hostel on the next day to avoid the heat.

The homeless person is suffering from limbs weakness and cannot walk.

The state home ministry had taken strong cognizance of the dereliction of duty by policemen and had initiated inquiry on Thursday.

“We were not happy with the replies given by all the three policemen on PCR and hence decided to take action. The matter is referred to Director General of police (DGP) for further inquiry,” Deshpande said.
