Malaysian PM says India 'invaded, occupied' Kashmir at UNGA

New York/New Delhi, Sep 29 (IANS): Malaysia joined Turkey and China in raising the Kashmir issue at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), with its Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad accusing India of "invading and occupying the country" of Jammu and Kashmir.

In his address to the 74th UNGA, Mohamad said: "Now, despite the UN resolution on Jammu and Kashmir, the country has been invaded and occupied."

"There may be reasons for this action but it is still wrong. The problem must be solved by peaceful means. India should work with Pakistan to resolve this problem. Ignoring the UN would lead to other forms of disregard for the UN and the Rule of Law," said Mahathir.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had met Mahathir in Russia earlier this month on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum, when India raised the issue of extradition of controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, and Kuala Lumpur discussed the issue of Kashmir.

According to Malaysian media, Kashmir was the 'main topic' during the bilateral meeting between Mahathir Mohamad and Modi on September 5.

Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah told reporters later, "PM Modi took time to clarify the position of Jammu and Kashmir while Mahathir Mohamad explained Malaysia's stand that all parties should meet and adhere to United Nations resolutions.

Saifuddin said Mahathir did not pledge support for or against any parties but hoped "the conflict would be settled and it would not escalate in a war".

Mahathir had also suggested bringing in a "third party if necessary or to bring the case to international court".

Saifuddin told reporters that, "Malaysia as an Islamic country with its own position among Islamic countries can explain the actual situation if the matter is brought up at any international platform".

On the issue of Zakir Naik, he said: "Zakir Naik was mentioned by Prime Minister Modi in passing and he (Modi) said the matter was being discussed by officers of both countries.

"That was how he (Modi) presented it. Then, Mahathir did not respond as most of the time was used to discuss Kashmir.

However, Indian Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale had said then that the two leaders discussed the extradition of Naik.

Later, Mahathir had rejected the claim that Modi had asked for Naik to be extradited.

During his press conference in Delhi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had said that India has put in an extradition request for Zakir Naik.

Mahathir, who had met Zakir Naik in July last year, had told media that Naik would not be deported since he has Permanent Residency, as long as he does not create any problems.

On the sidelines of the UNGA, Pakistan, Turkey and Malaysia held a trilateral meeting during which they decided to jointly launch an English language TV channel dedicated to confronting Islamophobia and removing "misperceptions" about Islam.

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan announced the decision on Thursday after his meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.

The three-nation channel would offer Muslims a dedicated media presence to help in "setting the record straight" on Islam and fighting the phenomenon of Islamophobia internationally.

At the UNGA, China, a good friend of Pakistan, had raised the Kashmir issue, with its Foreign Minister Wang Yi in his address repeating Beijing's stated position on Kashmir.

He had termed Kashmir as a "dispute left from the past" and called for its resolution based on UN Security Council resolutions and bilateral agreements. "No actions that would unilaterally change the status quo should be taken," Wang had said.

Turkey's Erdogan had in his address said that despite the UN resolutions, "eight million people are stuck" in Kashmir. He had called for the Kashmir issue to be solved through dialogue rather than conflict and criticised the international community for failing to pay attention to the issue.

India is Malaysia's 10th largest trading partner, where the total bilateral trade target of $15 billion set for 2020 was achieved in 2018/2019.

Most of us have been very ignorant about the history of Jammu and Kashmir. Here is an excerpt form wiki about the pre Independence Kashmir. Sold to a ruler for 75 lakh Rupees. And now in the cluthes of 3 vultures eating into it from all sides.

Jammu and Kashmir, also known as Kashmir and Jammu,[1] was a princely state during the British East India Company rule as well as the British Raj in India from 1846 to 1947. The princely state was created after the First Anglo-Sikh War, when the East India Company, which had annexed the Kashmir Valley,[2] Jammu, Ladakh, and Gilgit-Baltistan from the Sikhs as war indemnity, then sold the region to the Raja of Jammu, Gulab Singh, for rupees 75 lakh.

At the time of the partition of India and the political integration of India, Hari Singh, the ruler of the state, delayed making a decision about the future of his state. However, an uprising in the western districts of the State followed by an attack by raiders from the neighbouring Northwest Frontier Province, supported by Pakistan, forced his hand. On 26 October 1947, Hari Singh acceded to India in return for the Indian military being airlifted to Kashmir, to engage the Pakistan-supported forces.[3] The western and northern districts presently known as Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan passed to the control of Pakistan, while the remaining territory stayed under Indian control, later becoming the Indian administered state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Malaysian PM must learn history to know that it was Pakistan who invaded and occupied part of Kashmir (now POK) in October 1947 when the then King of Kashmir willingly opted to merge the kingdom with India. Pak and Malaysia playing the religion card will no more work in the 21st century.

The Kashmir is purely an internal matter of India and it is unfortunate that the present government presented it to the Indians and the world that they have achieved a great success covering the actual problem faced by the people there as supreme court judge himself said he wanted to visit to see the real situation. The Kashmir problem must have solved without giving scope for external forces to rise unnecessary hue and cry. It is unfortunate that present government is unnecessarily creating a hype to divert the attention from economic slowdown, unemployment and shortage of funds for government and to create an impression that it is very brave and solved the problem to garner votes.

This is another instance of the stand of the Malaysian President's rhetoric against India. Earlier he had mentioned that the ASEAN agreement will be signed on October 19 even if India does not agree for the terms and India will be kept out. It is time India bans all business, travel & tourism with Malaysia as it did with Pakistan

Although invoking and revoking of article 370 is completely India's internal matter but it has put lives of Kashmiris at risk which in turn will prove counter productive for India in international forum. Every Kashmiri including Kashmiri Pandits are questioning BJP govt for abrogation of articl 370 this will put India in a very embarrassing and weak position. If people of Kashmir are not in favour of it then what is more against BJP govt????... As it is abrogation of article wasn't done in a democratic, constitutional and parliamentary way. BJP govt hasn't taken opposition in parliament and Kashmir state assembly in confidence to abrogate this article. India is losing respect and recognition as largest democracy in the world.

when asked about minority Uighur Muslims, he says 'Malaysia does not want to take a confrontational stance ..he also also said China’s might was the reason Muslim-majority Malaysia did not speak out much against Beijing’s alleged repression of Uighur Muslims. “You don’t just try and do something which would fail anyway, so it is better to find some other less violent ways not to antagonise China too much, because China is beneficial for us,” !!..this exactly hos words!!...as far as Turkey is concerned, he already has border complication with Greece, Armenia and ...he has bigger problem with Kurdhs..Did he consider them as freedom fighter!!...lets be strong militarily/financially...dare any one question our Internal matter..
