Yangon, Sep 30 (IANS): At least 27 displaced persons have returned to Myanmar from Bangladesh, arriving at a reception camp in Rakhine state, immigration authorities said on Monday.

The displaced people made up of 14 families including some children. They were received at the Nga Khu Ya reception centre last week, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Myanmar authorities managed their repatriation process, providing them with humanitarian assistance and issuing national verification cards after scrutiny in accordance with the immigration and security rules.

A total of 3,450 verified displaced persons had been expected to be repatriated to Myanmar on August 22, but the repatriation attempt failed at that time.

Myanmar and Bangladesh agreed in August 2018 for early repatriation of displaced persons from Rakhine who fled to the neighbouring country.

In June 2018, Myanmar also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the UN Development Programme and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees on assisting Myanmar government's repatriation process of displaced persons from Rakhine state.

The Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) extremists launched repeated attacks on police outposts in Rakhine in August 2017, displacing a vast number of residents to areas bordering Bangladesh.
