Bengaluru: 21-year-old student ends life after alleged ragging

Bengaluru, Oct 24: A 21-year-old student is suspected to have committed suicide after being allegedly ragged by his seniors. 

Gagan, a native of Gauribidanur in Kolar was pursuing his first year B Sc in Agriculture at University of Agriculture Sciences in Bengaluru. He was staying at the University Hostel and had complained to his parents that he was being ragged routinely. 

Police suspect that Gagan ended his life by jumping before a moving train on late October 22 evening. 

Gagan was a top scorer in SSLC and PUC and had secured a government seat in B Sc (Agriculture) at the University. 

Gagan’s parents have lodged a police complaint that their son was ragged and had told them that he found the ‘torture’ unbearable. Gagan’s uncle Mallesh confirms that Gagan had complained on being ragged. 

The railway police have registered a case of unnatural death and are probing to find if the death was a suicide or if foul play was involved. 

Gagan’s seniors, classmates and college staff will be questioned, a senior railway police official added.

    Hostel management should install CCTV camera and watch the movement. The culprits who caused this young chap to commit suicide should be identified and sacked immediately plus sentenced to life imprisonment to teach lesson to others. Its very sad that such things are taking place continuously and no action is being taken by hostel management or police. I wish any student who is faces ragging should be bold enough and beat them. Dont let such offenders go without punishment. Break their hands and legs. Senior students think as if the hostel is their Father property. Its shame that hostel management is silent on the issue.

    Strict action to be taken against all involved in this tragedy. Also hostel in-charge and parents also to be arrested for carelessness

    Ragging is a menace like cancer, ruining the lives of so many young people. But it goes unchecked and un hindered in many educational institutions due to a spineless management , and a culture where the rich brats get away with anything with money power. Will our society ever learn ?

    Really sad... When ragging is not allowed and it's against the principles/laws/discipline of college...why management is not keeping an eye on the new students? It's really painful to know one talented young man committed suicide.. Even after informing parents.. Why parents too didn't inform the management? After everything is over... what's the use in complaining? Awake and arise parents... Your duty is not over just by putting them into the hostel and render their mess bills time to time... Meet them often...keep in contact everyday and find out their difficulties and try to solve...whats the use of crying after losing your valuable child ???😪😪

    It is so sad .A young man was hoping of a good future ,was smart and studies too were super.Now his future familys hopes are now ended in tragody.This ragging is everywhere .Why dont hostel or universities head dont give any attention to this?Students too should concentrate on studies and well being of themselves.Now would these students who were responsible for ragging and his death happy that they succeeded?First place why did this student not complained to superiors but only Parents?Even Parents should have complained about it and asked to take necessary steps.Now without proper complain from boy ,no witnesses ,they will not come forward or succeed.Down with your ragging.so many students die every year with this ragging in In India or in England.may his soul rest in peace.Heartfelt sympathy to his family.

    Ragging is a wost offense. Inspite of being aware, these students indulge in ragging. If proven guilty, punish the offenders harshly.
