Mangalore, Sep 14:
‘Habba Sauharda’, a harvest festival, was celebrated by ‘Dharma Samanvaya’, the movement for religious harmony, at the Milagres Jubilee Hall on Sunday September 13, with the participation of various guests and members of different communities.

The programme was organized as an effort at religious harmony with the Hindu harvest festival and the Christian ‘Monti Fest’ blending together here.

Nalin Kumar Kateel, member of parliament, inaugurated the programme by symbolically sharing the festival drink.

Bishop of Mangalore, Fr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, blessed the occasion and said, “Religious harmony is the basis of living in society and the celebration of festivals with all communities joining in helps understand the great values of festivals”.

Fr John Fernandes, chairman, Christianity Chair in Mangalore University and patron of Dharma Samanvaya, said, “Festivals are celebrated based on culture of the land, but the way of celebrating it is different. But harmony among the members of various religions should be maintained”.

M B Abdul Rahiman, chairman, Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy, said, “Religious harmony should be maintained for peace in society. In recent days there has been a threat to religious harmony. It should be corrected and we have to find a solution to the trouble in society and such programmes will create brotherhood among all the religions”.

Dr Vaman Nandavar gave a lecture on the celebration of the harvest festival as per Tulu culture while Concepta Alva presented a similar talk on Monti Fest and Dr D R Sadananda spoke about the harvest festival celebrated in the CSI community.

Dr Vinay Hegde, vice-chancellor, Nitte University, and scholar Yerya Laxminarayana Alva were also present and spoke about the importance of the festivals and the harmony among various religions. Eric Ozario and other organizers of ‘Habba Sauharda’ were also present.

‘Gummatt’ song by Valerian D’Souza and his group and Tulu cultural presentation by Mime Ramdas and group were also held. Shreelatha U A gave the vote of thanks while Manohar Prasad was the master of ceremony.

One important person who is missing here is prof pattabirama somayaji who has done so much, never minding the threats he constantly faces, for a peaceful coexistence of the followers of different religions. anyway, good attempt.

Beautiful function that depicts the rich culture of the kodiyala coast! How we wish we could partake of it.....though employment and marriage have wrenched some of us away from our lovely birth place, we maintain that love for Mangalore. More because of this message of equality of all religions. An email is doing the rounds in Mumbai that Kateel refused to partake of the meal at the function- was there is a reason for this?

The motive was good, the action was good and the after effect shall bound to be good. However my personal observation is that Firstly it was mainly Christian clergy vs Hindu and Muslim laity, who were invited. Absence of Hindu and Muslim clery and Christian Laity Leaders DULLED THE EFFECT OF UNITY IN DIVERSITY THEME. Secondly our organisers have created a five star ambiance to this venue.Which was uncalled for this United Harvest Festival. Thirdly the invitees were the elites from different community, hence the effect of this utsav is limited. Hope the organisors of this historic event shall see through my view point while they plan to do the similar utsavs.Congratulations Rev. Dr. Fernandes for your effeorts.

Many congratulations to Rev.Dr.John Fernandes & our Bishop for such a wonderful event in Mangalore. Whatever difference in thiking and beliving, the outcome of human being nature should be in one language as Harmony, love and friendship. If we want live good life on this earth all must understand the need of each other and reach other in need, so that one day the difference will exit and goodness will shine in human beings. May ''''Dharma Samanvaya’ retain peace and harmony in Mangalore and in India.

I second Mr. Ravindranath Shetty''s opinion. Like Keralites have Onam, we too must have one common festival. This will help us bury the past faster.

Very pleasing to see Mangaloreans from different sections/religious background are on single celebration platform. Congratulation to the organizer’s for organizing such an important and need of the hour event. My request to the "Dharma Samanvya" organizers to organize a yearly common state festival, involving all sections of the society/state to promote unity/encourage brotherly relations between the citizens.
