Puttur, Oct 27: "The government has already forwarded a notification to the state Governor, towards accepting and implementing the Vaidyanathan Committee report. Once the report is implemented, the government intervention if any, in the affairs of the cooperative institutions will come to an end," said Udupi-Chikmagalur MP, D V Sadanand Gowda. He was speaking after inaugurating the Puttur branch of Venkataramana Cooperative Credit Society that started operations at the Venkataramana Towers near the local bus stand, on Sunday October 25.

Gowda said that he is aware of the fact that the cooperative organizations have not been able to grow strong and become self-reliant, because of the government interference in their day-to-day affairs. To enable the societies to grow, the government is committed to implement the said report, he added. As the nationalized banks have been able to reach only 20% of the country's population, cooperatives can play a stellar role in improving the financial status of the rural people. Unless the village life improves, the entire financial system becomes weaker, he noted.

Dharmapalanath Swamiji of Mangalore branch of Adichunchanagiri Mutt delivered benedictory address. He said that the societies which have a genuine concern for the needs of the people naturally achieve progress.

MLA Mallika Prasad inaugurated computer section of the society, while Bantwal MLA Ramanath Rai inaugurated the strong room. The first deposit receipt was handed over to the customer by C P Jayaram Gowda, convener of Mahalingeshwar ITI, while Karnataka Cashew Development Corporation president, Kuntikan Lakshman Gowda, handed over the first share certificate to a member.
