Beltangady, oct 27: Ashraf (20), living near Charmadi post office, died on Monday October 26, after a hillock located adjacent to a college in Ujire, near which he was working, suffered a landslide.

Ashraf (20) was a labourer involved with the work of building a protective wall adjacent to the hillock that stands adjacent to the college premises. The labourers were digging the ground for laying foundation for the protective wall. While Ashraf was buried alive under huge mounds of earth that came crashing down, other labourers named Abdul Karim (42), Hasainar (45)  escaped with some injuries. They were taken to hospital in ambulance. The labourers had seen the landslide happening, and were fleeing from the scene. Ashraf, who could not immediately run, got trapped under the mud.

The hillock is just ten-feet high. The tragedy occurred when the labourers were working directly under it. Only a part of the hillock suffered landslide. Fire brigade personnel, villagers and workers of the institution for which the work was in progress, helped the labourers.

Inspector Gangireddy, sub-inspector of police Subbapooramutt, etc., rushed to the accident spot after getting information. Former MLA Prabhakar Bangera, taluk panchayat vice-president Tanuja Shekhar and others visited the spot. The local policemen have registered a case.
