Mangaluru, Mar 11: Padma Shri awardee Harekala Hajabba highlighted the need to save government schools from shutting down.

Speaking at an achievers programme held at the University College on Wednesday, March 11, he stressed that government schools should provide quality education. “There are many students who have studied in government primary and high schools, faring well in their career and life. We should not neglect government schools. Effective
projects need to be planned, to save the schools,” he said.

“It took me decades to realize the importance of education. A few incidents in my life, made me realise that with education one cannot be fooled easily. Education is a must to develop sincerity, personality and will help in inspiring others,” he said.

When asked, who inspired him, Harekala Hajabba said, “I was not inspired by anyone. When I was selling oranges, I faced few incidents which made me start a school. To make the school possible, I had to plead with many people and am still striving to develop the school.”

The achievers programme was organised by Kannada and Culture department of Dakshina Kannada district. Hajabba was felicitated in the programme.

District Bus Owners Association led by its president Dilraj Alva also felicitated Harekala Hajabba and handed over a cheque of Rs 1 lac. Harekala Hajabba requested that the cheque be written in the name of the school and urged to remove his name, for which Dilraj Alva agreed.

"Everyone likes Hajabba for his humbleness, politeness and his innocence. Even though he is illiterate, he is called as the saint of letters,” said journalist Guruvappa Baalepuni.

Harshitha compered the event. Assistant director of Kannada and Culture department Rajesh G, welcomed the gathering and lecturer Vibha B J rendered the vote of thanks.

Hats off to Padma Shru Harekala Hajabba for the cause of education.
I studied in Government Fisheries High School, Pithrodi, Udyavara, Udupi District.
Government Schools provide the same education as any other new fashioned schools of present time. It is the student who enrolled and the teachers make a difference in their path of education and achievements. Kannada language is not a barrier to achieve knowledge. Japan is a developed nation and fully uses Japanese language even in University education. Present parents of our region adopted a fashion to send their children for expensive English medium schools, making the owners of the schools millionaires.
Most of our great achievers have studied in Kannada medium and government schools. There is no end or hurdle for a child to achieve success.
Admire the letter of saint Hajabba and wish him all the best and good health.

What Sri Harekala says is true. Not all children can afford private schools, with lot of fees.what should normal daily wagers children do when Govt.schools are closed due to lack of children.I too studied in govt.school and high school. So far dont feel was not in private.(was not possible if there was no govt.school)Didnt get ranks.but there were co students who were very clever, become doctors too.Only Govt.also must too invest towards their school ,some motivation, good teachers, good envirements for students to study well.Public too must encourage their students to send to Govt.school.Only I should mention here the fact that our Parish priest in my time was insisting catholic students should go to catholic schools and thats how I had to attend 8th std.church school as I failed once in govt school.(maths)
