Bantwal: Corona scare - Several civic workers checked with single thermometer

Daijiworld Media Network - Bantwal(SP)

Bantwal, Apr 25: It has come to light that the environmental engineer of Bantwal municipality used the same thermometer to check body temperatures of several civic workers. A video containing footage of this act has become viral in social sites. The video clearly shows environmental engineer of Bantwal, Yasmeen Sultan, shifting the thermometer from one mouth to the other without bothering to sterilise it.

There has been widespread anger at the irresponsible behaviour of a government official from Bantwal, which has witnessed two coronavirus-related deaths and has two COVID 19 positive cases recently. The health department has prescribed that thermometer should be put in boiling water before using it for anyone else.

It is said that use of thermometer for testing for coronavirus-related fever is restricted. But the officer apparently threw the rules to the wind. Chief officer of the municipality Leena Britto, has served a notice on the environmental engineer seeking an explanation on this irresponsible behaviour. She has sought to know why disciplinary action should not be initiated against the officer, and asked him to furnish reply within three days.

It is said that temperature levels of civic workers was tested without the knowledge of the chief officer.

Oral thermometers get exposed to a lot of germs, so plan to clean one before and after each use. Old-fashioned mercury glass thermometers are no longer recommended, but you can use one of these cleaning and disinfecting methods if you're still using one. However, it's best to replace it with a modern thermometer as soon as you're able.

    Soap and Water Method.

    You will need:
    Liquid soap and cold water
    A bowl
    Clean paper towels

    Instructions:
Wash the thermometer in a bowl of cold, soapy water.
Rinse thoroughly in clean running water. Shake off the excess water, but it's not necessary to dry before using it.
Use the thermometer immediately and then repeat the process.
Let the thermometer air dry on a clean paper towel before putting it away.

    Rubbing Alcohol Method

    You will need:
    70% to 90% rubbing alcohol. [Better 90%]
    Cotton ball or pad
    Clean paper towel/Napkins.

    Instructions:
Dip the cotton ball or pad in alcohol.
Rub the ball or pad on the entire thermometer, taking special care with the tip.
Rinse thoroughly under running water. You can shake off the excess water, but it's not necessary to dry before using it.
Use the thermometer immediately, and then repeat the disinfecting process, but don't rinse off the alcohol this time.
Let the thermometer air dry on a clean paper towel before putting it back in its case.

Please do not put the oral glass thermometer in BOILING water. Boiling water temperature is 100 degrees Celcius. It will breakdown!!!!.

The person needs to send a humanitarian course.

Let me clarify... Earlier we used to use oral thermometers which would be disinfected with 2% dettol... Then we used to make patients buy their own thermometers .. but now we use digital thermometers which are disinfected with surgical spirit before and after use.... We don't use hydrogen peroxide or boiling water nor dettol or savlon is used... We follow evidence based practice whereby we modify or change few practices based on available research results... But now the respective district health officers of each district have supplied gun like thermometers through which we check the temperature on the frontal area which is. The forehead. And each fever clinic is provided 2 thermometers. If they exhibit signs of covid or have any travel or contact history testing is done. Furthermore patients r observed by the ASHA workers of the particular area...

In the above case using a glass thermometer is insane and mere ignorance which shows that they dont respect the poor... And even disinfectants will not be completely effective ... So she should have used a government approved appratus. . she should be behind bars for violating the law....

No one can be so stupid . An educated person cannot do this unless there is some other sinister motive. The government should seriously investigate the rumors of an ideology spreading in India that is encouraging people to spread this so called 'Gods punishment' on kafirs.
Who authorized this particular individual to carry out this public action, and what is her role in the health inspection of the public ?

So far as I understand the Covid-19 virus cannot survive at temperatures above 50 degrees Celsius.

Boiling water has a temperature of 100 degrees Celsius.

So, in my opinion, what the lady has done is not bad at all.

If the thermometer is put in boiling water it will be damaged as the temperature of boiling water is 100 deg C. The administration should have provided contactless electronic thermometer. The Engineer should have refused the use of the contact thermometer .

Mangalorean Mangalore, whoever adviced or taught you about sterelizing thermometer ,is either a lay person without any knwoledge of medicine ,or simply a joke. However a thermometer will not be sterelized in boiling water .when done you dont have a thermometer .Thermometer will be disinfected in a solution of dettol for sometime . Half an hour atleast.Nowadays we do have modern digital thermometers can be kept in ear or just without touching person as in airports.what this lady has done a criminal act.she should be punished and case should be filed. Is she a really a medical person or a fake one?No distance to each other ,from one mouth to another. Here it was a easy method of helping to spread .

This is an appalling & spine chilling incident from a state, which is famous for it's numerous medical colleges that churn out so called "world class" graduates!

And just see the public awareness; all in Q are offering their necks just like "sacrificial lambs" out for slaughter without any objection or resistance whatsoever!I

It's very ironical that big mobs r protesting against internment of CORONA victim bodies in places near to their inhabitation; and here?????

IMHO, considering the seriousness of the issue, the personnel involved in this episode should be immediately suspended so that the informed people do not lose complete confidence in these health agencies!

The qualifications of the person resorting to such a callous approach needs to be checked, as no person even with basic knowledge of hygiene standards, forget asepsis, would practice such foolishness in PUBLIC!

This can also put the people at risk for various other serious infections too like HIV, HPV if they have cuts, open sores (ghutka chewers), bleeding gums etc.!

For a logical person the immediate question that comes to mind is: "IF THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS IN PUBLIC, WHAT COULD BE HAPPENING INSIDE CLOSED DOORS"!!
    I end here..
    Jai Hind!!
