Mangaluru: In bid to curb suicides, fencing work begins on Netravati bridge

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Jul 5: In a bid to curb the number of suicide cases that have occured at Netravati bridge over the years, fencing work has been undertake on both sides of the bridge starting Saturday July 4.

The bridge had become infamous owing to several suicide cases. Incidents of jumping from the bridge into the Netravati river have reportedly increased after the suicide of Cafe Coffee Day owner Siddharth last year.

This bridge has also been called a 'suicide spot'.

Public had urged the city administration to put up fence on both sides to prevent people from jumping into the river in a bid to kill themselves. The administration acted on the plea, and the work of fencing began on Saturday.

The administration is erecting a smokeless safety screen, across the Netravati bridge humans who are emotionally disturbed, finding no avenues of escape routes, will certainly commit suicide elsewhere !!!! Prevention is better then cure... hence the authorities should set up helplines, with dedicated teams of counselors, psychiatrists in every public, private hospitals, wards of Dakshin Kannada district...

If this idea is accepted after fencing the next logical step would be to ban sale of ropes, sari, dupatta and bedsheets and then kerosene diesel and petrol and so on ,the list is long but at the end the person who wants to commit suicide will do it in umpteen ways. The only solution is counselling through anonymous dedicated helpline

Those who want to jump are prevented but those who just go wading through the river not knowing how to swim cannot be stopped; they will find various spots to do this if they want to die. And there are myriad ways to end life; not just by drowning. No one can stop that.

    This is a bad Idea!

Instead they should put a net secretly under thr bridge. When someone jumps they get entangled to it and can be rescued. When they land on the net it should make a funny ‘toinngg’ sound. It might make the person dying by suicide laugh and make him want to live again.

Such a fence that is put, they’ll find another spot. This fence is used only to maintain the reputation of the bridge and river. Not in the interest of the public.

What a foolishness. Educate all individuals by religious leaders informing for suicide there is no acceptance from God. Whatever difficulty occur in life to should complete cycle of life. There is no moksha people who commit suicide is an act of nothing but cowardness. When bad things appear in mind..surrender to god fully and try to visit age old homes, hospitals to see how people living in painful with an hope tommorow are going to recover. Please remember always you will find a short route to escape from misery of life..how about your parents. For your sake they stand in front of gods and godessess many hours in religious places for good life. Be brave and always look down people who are below in all respects and the way they struggle for each day. Atleast we are much better than them and be happy with whatever god provided us and thankful him in all respects.
