Mangalore: State Sports Minister Mulls Over Institution of New Sports Awards

Mangalore, Feb 27: State sports and youth affairs minister Goolihatti Shekar discussed a plan to institute new awards for achievers, who were deprived of national recognition for their achievements in games and sports fields.
Speaking to reporters in this regard on his visit to Mangala Stadium here on Saturday February 27, minister said that outstanding personalities in sports and games, who miss out on the national level recognition, at least need to be honoured at the state-level. Mulling over setting up award equivalent to Ekalavya award, he said that the issue need to be discussed. Every year one sports personality should be awarded Chief Minister’s award, while the other two sports minister’s award. The criteria for the award should include recognition at the district-level, from the public and media.

There are also plans to improve the city as the sports city next only to Bangalore. The works on synthetic track at the stadium will be taken up soon and plans are afoot for another swimming pool for the city, said minister but refuse to divulge details in this regard for according to the rules assurances can made only after assembly sessions.
Architect Venkatesh Pai explained Rs 14 crore worth new development plan of the stadium to the minister. Mangalore south MLA N Yogish Bhat and members from sports associations including Naveen Shetty accompanied the minister on his visit.
