Udupi : Over 3,000 Protestors Approach DC opposing Belman Land Acquisition

Udupi, Mar 2: 'Bhu Santrasta Horata Samiti' organized a massive protest in front of the office of deputy commissioner here on Tuesday March 2 urging the state administration to withdraw the de-notification order of 1,138.04 acre fertile farmlands and plantations that are proposed to be acquired to set up Golden Corridor Project in Belman, Nandalike and Sooda villages of Karkala taluk under the district here.
Around 3,000 protesters led by the Samiti joined in the agitation seeking the state administration to save their farmlands. The protestors expressed fear that the fertile paddy fields, areca and palm plantation, jasmine farming, churches, schools, temples and traditional worship centres will be demolished, if the Project ever implemented.
Nandalike, a significant Tulunadu folklore centre has the landmark buildings of cultural importance. It is also the birth place of renowned Kannada poet Muddana and also has the historical traditional house of Krishnappa.
The samiti in the memorandum submitted through the deputy commissioner P Hemalatha urged the Chief Minister and and energy minister B S Yeddyurappa to honour their assurances denouncing acquisition of fertile farmlands for setting up of mega industries offered in the state capital Bangalore, recently.
Earlier, too the residents of three villages, Belman, Sooda and Nandalike of the taluk observed a total bandh in protest against proposed land acquisition when the government in January, recently issued denotification order to acquire the proposed land.
