Udupi : Over 3,000 Protestors Approach DC opposing Belman Land Acquisition
Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (RD/SB)

Udupi, Mar 2: 'Bhu Santrasta Horata Samiti' organized a massive protest in front of the office of deputy commissioner here on Tuesday March 2 urging the state administration to withdraw the de-notification order of 1,138.04 acre fertile farmlands and plantations that are proposed to be acquired to set up Golden Corridor Project in Belman, Nandalike and Sooda villages of Karkala taluk under the district here.

Around 3,000 protesters led by the Samiti joined in the agitation seeking the state administration to save their farmlands. The protestors expressed fear that the fertile paddy fields, areca and palm plantation, jasmine farming, churches, schools, temples and traditional worship centres will be demolished, if the Project ever implemented.

Nandalike, a significant Tulunadu folklore centre has the landmark buildings of cultural importance. It is also the birth place of renowned Kannada poet Muddana and also has the historical traditional house of Krishnappa.

The samiti in the memorandum submitted through the deputy commissioner P Hemalatha urged the Chief Minister and and energy minister B S Yeddyurappa to honour their assurances denouncing acquisition of fertile farmlands for setting up of mega industries offered in the state capital Bangalore, recently.

Earlier, too the residents of three villages, Belman, Sooda and Nandalike of the taluk observed a total bandh in protest against proposed land acquisition when the government in January, recently issued denotification order to acquire the proposed land.

Very good step taken by the villagers. Government not bothered about whether the land is fertile or not. Definitely they might have got a report from the village accountant showing the area not under cultivation to this effect.if they attacked the villeger we wont alow them and oppose them strictly.

It's high time that the people of this three affected villages (Belman,Nandalike and Sooda)of Karkala Taluk be the mute spectators for the thoughtless or ruthless act by the Government of Karnataka . There is a saying in Kannada "OGGATTINALLI BALAVIDE". If villagers unite in large numbers and protest & fight for their basic rights, nobody can stop them. But they need someone who can lead them in a "Democratic Manner".
Certainly the need of the hour is "Development"! But not destroying nature (Fertile cultivable agricultural land) and certainly not at the cost of the "middle class" farmers.
There is a lot of communal unrest started first in Mangalore and south Kanara districts in the recent past which was not the case at all in the history of these peace loving districts. We pray and hope for the justice from Justice B K Somasekhara Commission.
And now the land grab tamasha.
Who knows what's in store next! Any guess!!

Development should reach under developed areas of interior & north Karnataka (Belgaum, Bijapur, Rayachur)Manglore don't need more development as MRPL & Nagarjuna projects have alrady done enough damage to the natural beauty of Manglore. Companies are interested in fertile land with easy access to water and road access, near to port/airport etc. They are not interested in lands in north Karnataka which lacks power & water. Mr. Oscar Fernandes please return to Manglore and help our people.

Why the government is always behind fertile agricultural land? Is it because of a thought that all people in this area are middle class farmers, who earn their daily bread by hard work cannot raise their voice?.It is the time to wake up all.Sooda, nandalike is such a cool place because of river, forest and paddy fields. We talk about global warming and contribute for the same.Development should not take place at the expense of agriculture and displacement of farmers otherwise days are not far for importing rice from other countries.I have seen how the fertile land near MRPL became a desert for MSEZ.Local People even don't have faith of getting job here eventhough sacrifying the land which developed by their forefathers. Development is needed but not against the nature

It is nice to note that all communities are united in this worthy cause. If the people are together, no one can take away their land. But the government may play a trick. They might acquire ed land from willing sellers which will break the unity of the people. There could be others who are not staying there and are willing to sell the land as an opportunity. People should be always on their guards and meet regularly to ensure that they are always together, till they are assured that the project is totally withdrawn.

It is good to see people joining hands for justifiable cause putting behind all their personal and religious differences. For me Belman is one of the most beautiful places and would like to see as it is. People of Belman are intelligent and will not give up their struggle. Politicians are like scavengers and they have limited time to grab the opportunity. If development is their interest, they have plenty of barren land for industrialization.

I think it is high-time that we raise our united voice against acquisition of fertile, productive soil. I am sure there are loads of barren land available, if the government makes an effort to check and analyse the percentage of its usage they are sure to get lots. My appeal to all is to support this humble plea of our people against this ruthless act by the government. Live and let live be our policy.

We must continue the struggle. We the people of Karnataka must support these people in their struggle to hold on to their fertile lands. India is going against Mahatma's philosphy- agriculture is life and sustinence. The so called pollution caused by MRPL and furure SEZ is incomprehensible. We do not need much industries as they do not put food on the table but agriculture does. What is PM doing in giving the go ahead to SEZs. Has he forgotten Mahatma's teachings? Is he leading India in the wrong direction by eliminating the fertile lands in favour of SEZs, Why can't he create SEZs in barren governments lands? Just imagine an India without agriculture? Mr PM, protect our fertile lands, protect our farmers livelyhood and above all protect our country from chaos of industrialisation. In the long term, this is un sustainable. People have to fill their stomochs. Without agriculture and food how will they live? can they eat Rupees?

It is high time that the people, especially the farmers, of all 3 coastal districts, namely DK, NK and Udipi unitedly protest against forcible acquisition of fertile agricultural lands in the name of development. Development should not take place at the expense of agriculture and displacement of farmers. It is learnt that in the Permude locality (where the MSEZ is due to come up) paper records are already turning brittle because of the presence of SOx (sulphur di-oxide) in the atmosphere. It is left to one's imagination what is happening in the lungs of the people living in the neighbourhood of MRPL. Local residents reportedly are having respiratory problems. We have to also avoid another Bhopal tragedy taking place over here in the future. Further, it is necesary to take cognizance of global warming and protection of the environment.

Cant imagine why govt wants to acquire fertile land where as there is lots of burden land in north karnataka which i am sure people would be more happy to part with for the right compensation. Just a crowd of 3000 is not enough..mobilise atleast 3,00,000 people from all across DK & Mangalore district aganist this conspiracy of selling fertile land to Multi national companies for pittance..this has to stop and we have to unite and fight..

Few days back Udupi Pejavara Matha Swamiji went for a hunger strike for the same issue.Suddenly two miniters dispatched from B'Lore to appraise the swamiji in favour govt.Rest is history as all of us know!!
This govt is by the people (not)for the people (not)of the people.(not)
Undivided Dakshina Kannada in recent years sided with BJP electing MPs and MLAs.Now pls feel the heat!! This govt is not interested in safegaurding farmers fertile land instead making their life @hell.See Davangere,Bellary,Mangalore,Udupi,Bangalore and other places oppresing farmers to relinquesh fertile land for real estate and industrilisation. If people dont't want it then for whom ?? for politicians??? to make fast bucks!!???

It looks odd when CM wearing green (Dupatta)shawl while taking oath as CM in the name of farmers and giving maximum trouble to them by grabing their house, fertil land, place of worship, livelyhood,as we all know Tulunadu's Folklore centre NANDALIKE(MUDDANNA-MANORAMA SALLAFA)besides not providing power(current) for money also to cultivate the land Ect.(govt have promised to provide free power supply)

My request to swamiji is that as you committed to your opposition about grabbing fertile land for industrilisation or whatever purpose, your association in this momevent of agitation against injustice really matters and pls help these poor people to leave alone by supporting morally and personally.

Why such a fertile land like Sooda, Belman and Nandalike, which also are densely populated and are of such great cultural significance? Why not some barren lands in the interior Karnataka? Simply because Ports are nearby, spoil such divine land? People, it is not about development it is about these politicians who devour such beautiful places in order to make some bucks. And that money lands into foreign banks such as Swiss, or some out of the country projects. Please raise your voices against such demonic acts by governments. The entire twin district will be evacuated shortly, for sure.

They are not bothered about whether the land is fertile or not. Definitely they might have got a report from the village accountant showing the area not under cultivation to this effect.
