Puttur, Mar 9: In support of their demand for handing over the cases relating to the death of college students, Uttappa and Mohak Kumar under suspicious circumstances, to Corps of Detectives (COD), activists of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) sat in Dharna here on Monday March 8. As the students stuck to the stand that they would not budge till some responsible people’s representatives give them a concrete assurance, MLA, Mallika Prasad came from Bangalore and gave them a patient hearing.

Uttappa, a student of a college here, had died due to drowning in River Netravati. Mohak Kumar Mittur, a student of a college in Benjanapadav, was found to have died under mysterious circumstances near his native place some time back, by the side of railway tracks. The ABVP activists feel that both of them were killed by those who did not approve of their love affair with girls from some other religion.  They accused the policemen of not showing interest in the case, even though they have information about the culprits involved in these killings.

After the MLA promised to raise the issue in the assembly on Tuesday and to speak to the home minister personally to urge him to hand over the cases to the COD, the protestors withdrew their agitation. ABVP leaders Anilkumar Daddu, Dheeraj Bhattacharya, Satyanarayan Bhat, Chinmaya etc., led the protestors. Mother and elder sister of Uttappa also participated in the protest.

The officials of the forensic laboratory, Bangalore, are expected to arrive in Puttur on Tuesday March 9 for investigation. Even though it was apparent that Kumar was tortured and done to death, the policemen have been unable to achieve any progress in the investigations so far.
