Mangalore: Sacked Contract Workers Begin Indefinite Dharna at Wenlock

Mangalore, Mar 18: On Wednesday, March 17, the sacked contract workers of Wenlock Hospital, who had been assigned with the security and cleaning work at the Wenlock by the agencies that had been handling these jobs so far, began an indefinite stir, demanding to take them back to work,  at the premises of the district Wenlock Hospital here on Wednesday March 17.

13 workers on security duty and 35 cleanliness workers were asked to go back, when they reported for duty on Sunday March 14, without any notice. After the office of the district medical officer was mobbed by the workers on the same day, the policemen held a meeting in which the workers were assured on behalf of the hospital that they wold be absorbed for work.

As the management of the hospital failed to keep its word, the security staff began an indefinite dharna in front of the hospital under the banner of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) on Wednesday. In the meanwhile, a memorandum was submitted to the commissioner of labour department by DYFI, urging him to intervene in the issue to provide justice to the workers and to take steps against the previous contractors, who had defrauded the workers by not paying them proper wages and providing other facilities.

Leader of the workers, Reshma, DYFI district committee president, Munir Katipalla, general secretary, Dayanand Shetty, Pramila, Bunders Workers Union leader, Vishnumurty and some others took part in the dharna.
