Udupi: Controversial content in sixth standard text will not be taught

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Aug 25: Minister for primary and secondary education, S Suresh Kumar, said that the teachers would be instructed against teaching controversial content found in the sixth standard social science textbook where Hindu religious beliefs are mocked at.

The textbook mentions that in the past, food shortage was encountered because of performing fire sacrifices (Yajna, Yaga). This issue was being debated in social media since the last few weeks. Paryaya Admar Math Sri Ishapriya Swamiji, who noticed this, had sent a voice message to minister Suresh Kumar, expressing disappointment at the fact that wrong information is being imparted to the students through the textbooks.

The minister, in response, said that this textbook was not printed this year, nor had he got it revised during his term. He said that the teachers will be asked not to teach this controversial content to the students. Paryaya Admar Math sources said that he assured to remove this section of the text during the revision of the textbook next year.

In Bangalore, in our housing complex, there are many school going children. I asked one girl who is in 7th standard, whether she was told by teacher that by fire yajnas, people encounter food shortage.

She told "Yes uncle. During yajna, lot of milk products, ghee and other food items are put in the fire. After yajna, they give meals to thousands of people. Many Brahmins attend and you know uncle, their stomach, they eat 25 laddus and take 100 as dakshina. Naturally, for some days, our area shops are not having enough food supply". This, she said, was taught to her by teacher.

this shows that the lesson is factual and relevant to the food problem existing in the country for the poor people... burning nutritious food products is not good. Not only the lesson is important for children, from the response of the child, it appears it has also been put across correctly by the teachers to the students...

Was there a need to change the history. If the earlier people have studied the same lessons why it should be changed as the religion remains the same. Is it not pressurizing the school children as well as the teachers.

Teach the children the true and real history eventhough if it is controversial and do not skip. Don't teach them twisted history to suit your interest because they are bound to get the right history once they are matured and condemn you.
