Mangaluru, Sep 16: The Arabian Sea acquired green colour at Hosabettu and Mukka beach areas on Tuesday, September 15. Photographs clicked at night also projected a blue colour of the sea.
Due to heavy rains lashing the region since the last some days, lot of water has flown into the sea. On account of microalgae organisms that have flown with water, the sea has acquired this colour it is believed. This phenomenon is observed only in certain stretches of the sea and not throughout.
Under instructions of MLA Dr Bharath Shetty Y to check whether pollution of the sea had resulted in this colour change, officials of Karnataka State Pollution Control Board led by Keertikumar, collected seawater samples from the seashore and sent the same to the laboratory for testing. It is learnt that the coast guard has also collected seawater samples for checking for possible pollutants.
Gangadhar Hosabettu, former president of Mogaveera Mahajana Sangha, said that the colour of the sea could also have changed on account of pollution. He said that things like algae often get stuck to fishnets and create problems for the fishermen. He also added that sometimes hard objects which look like tar also give rise to problems to the fishermen. He said suitable action is needed if the seawater has been polluted.
