New Delhi, Oct 23: Former India captain Kapil Dev was hospitalised after he suffered a heart attack. According to reports, the World Cup-winning captain has undergone angioplasty. Further details on his health status are awaited.
The news was confirmed by journalist Teena Thacker on Twitter. “Legendary cricketer Kapil Dev @therealkapildev suffers heart attack, undergoes angioplasty at a hospital in Delhi. Wishing him a speedy recovery,” she wrote.
The former captain is known to be the finest all rounders in the history of the game and represented India for over a decade. He had made his debut for India against Pakistan in Quetta on October 1, 1978, before making his Test debut later that month in Faisalabad.
He represented India in 131 Tests, amassing 5,248 runs in addition to picking up 434 wickets. Kapil Dev also represented India in 225, ODIs, scoring 3,783 runs and picking up 253 wickets. In 1983, his made a remarkable moment in the game after he led India to their first-ever World Cup triumph, defying all odds and beat the mighty West Indies in the Finals at the Lord's.
Post retirement, in 1994, he served as the head coach of the Indian. He took charge of the team in 1999 but had a forgettable stint with the team.
In his tenure, India won only one test match against New Zealand at home and had two major series losses in Australia (3–0) and at home against South Africa (2–0). He had to resign from the post in the wake of the match-fixing scandal. Later, Kapil Dev was cleared of all the charges.
