Mangalore : Family Unable to Claim Body of Kin

MANGALORE, May 12 (The Hindu): After suffering for nearly a month with over 30 per cent burns, Leelavathi (36), a resident of Surathkal, died at a private hospital here around 2 a.m. on Monday. But her family has not been able to take possession of her body since they are unable to clear the bills of the hospital where she was admitted. Gangadhar Achari (47), brother of the deceased, told The Hindu, “I have sold and pawned everything I had, including my wife's wedding jewellery. I have no money to clear the hospital bills.” Mr. Achari, who is a carpenter, said that despite pleading with the hospital authorities, they had refused to release the body of his sister. Besides, the hospital is charging Rs. 1,000 for each day the body is kept in the morgue.

The managing director of the hospital said, “Is it wrong for us to demand that we be paid for our services? Let them pay the money and take the body. There can be no compromise.”

Hospital records show that the treatment cost was Rs. 2.5 lakh. “We have already paid around Rs. 1.75 lakh. We can pay another Rs. 25,000,” Mr. Achari said.

Reacting to the issue, Additional Superintendent of Police R. Ramesh said, “It is not only unethical but also illegal. I will immediately look into the matter and take necessary action.”

the hospital built/owned by the liquor "Kalla bhatti Sarai" goon AJ Shetty, he has made the money from these poor people with squeezing from their blood, he was cruel when he was doing this “Kalla Bhatti” business, long time back plenty people departed from their lives after drinking the AJ spirit was calling 'Thotte', but nothing has came out from his name because he was powerful with the money, all the excise department, police department was sitting under his chair unconsciously, so also he has trained his staff also the same way with the same manner, there are plenty of cases are unjustified with the middle class and the poor people, also they intentionally kill the patients with showing their huge amount of bill after the futile treatment as like the awful experience with Kishore D’souza Katipalla, Sharjah.

If the ICU is empty! without any reason the patient will shifting in to the ICU for charging the burden on that poor patient, these all hospitals are become commercial now day’s better they change the name of that hospital as “The Human Slaughtering center”

This is highly unacceptable and unethical. This is when we need proactive help from all the media groups to highlight the issue and avoid similar cases in other places. Hope the Govt brings in new policies to overcome the plight of needy atleast in medical treatments.

Dear friends i have also a very bad experienced with A.J Hospital. On my last vacation in 2009 in Nov I along with my family were on a pilgrimage to Vailankani ,on my my way back to mangalore my daughter who was 3years old had high fever and the temperature 103' and her skin was peeling out whereever you touch ,mean time i had contacted a doctor by phone as we were travelling by train ,he suggested us to go to A.J Hospital. As soon as we reached Mangalore we rushed to AJ Hospital immediately we went to the ICU and there were Doctors sitting with no work but took more than 20minutes to attend my daughter same time they told me pay the fees which I did but the treatment was very poor the nurses were not polite nor were least interested to assist the and were asking us to give tapid sponge ( sponge bath) after a long time they took the baby to the ICU for ing the canula ,but none of the nurses could identify the vain for a prick and they left us idol and were busy chating and giggling in the next room when i asked for what was happening they acted rudely to us , my baby was admitted same night, but no nurse was attending the patient and asking us to have an eye on the drips and instead the nurse is was busy showing the facilities in the room. Nobody was bothered and no Resident doctor was informed about this case .I had to force for Discharge in the early morning when the bill was given to me they charged me 3,500 for nursing fees whereas no nurse had attended my daughter.

It was hospital's duty to to see if the patient is able to clear the bills by demanding money in advance, at least in cases like this where the treatment costing in lakhs. If they have done this, they are not at fault now. In this case patient's fly should not have taken any treatment in this hospital if they were aware of the expenses.

We can not solely blame hospital. If they waive the bills for this particular case, tomorrow another case will prevail. Afterall, this hospital is not a charitable hospital. However, on humanitarian grounds, they may waive part of the bill. By the way, where are our self proclaimed 'Hinduism' protectors ? They have to come forward in these situations to help the needy and not to gather jobless goondas to protect criminals & underworld dons from law. Unfortunate thing is that, they themselves would not help these destitutes, but, if minority come forward to help, it becomes a conversion issue.

When it comes to money everyone is heartless. Have they realised the plight of the family who has lost a dear one. The hospital may have some way of waiving off the balance dues, some affiliated charitable institution who could come to the rescue of this family. If it was any prominent person or a politician, the hospital would have gone out of its way to render assistance than treat this shameless way. Well one more suggestion where are the institutions which harrass people in the name of religion / culture et etc. Can't they come forward to help in this noble cause.
