'Will oppose anti-conversion law in UP assembly' - Akhilesh Yadav

Daijiworld Media Network - Lucknow

Lucknow, Nov 29: Following the nod given by the Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel for the anti-conversion law in the state, former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday said that his will party will oppose the Bill in the state legislature.

Earlier in the week, the state Cabinet passed the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2020 to prevent the 'forcible' or 'dishonest' religious conversions including those for the sake of marriage. The accused in this matter could serve jail time for up to 10 years.

The UP Governor had approved the ordinance on Saturday. Now, it will be presented in the state legislature for passage. Speaking to reporters regarding the Bill, Yadav said, "The Samajwadi Party is not in favour of any such law. We will oppose it (when it comes to the assembly). The government does not want to debate on more important issues due to which it brought the ordinance."

Yadav also alleged that Bill was creating hatred and rift in society.
