Abu Dhabi, May 19 (IANS/WAM): The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries produced over 22.2 million tonnes of municipal solid waste in 2009, as rapid industrial growth and expanding population contributing to the waste disposal problem in the region.
The GCC countries produced 4.6 million tonnes of industrial solid waste in the same period, reflecting the need for more efficient waste management strategies.
To discuss the issue, the 2nd Middle East Waste Summit is being organised in Dubai May 18-20.
The summit gives a platform to governments and businesses in the region to discuss the growing threat posed by inefficient waste management.
Last year's inaugural edition was attended by 2,691 industry professionals from 53 countries.
