Mangalore: Fishing Ban to Come into Effect from June 10

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jun 4: The state government, through a notification, has banned fishing in the state’s sea waters, by boats fitted with in-board or outboard engines of over 10 HP capacities, from June 15 to August 10. This ban will be in force for a total of 57 days. The ban is being enforced annually, to help the fishes to breed, and also in view of the dangers posed by the tumultuous sea during the monsoon season.

Under the order, issued under the Karnataka Marine Fishing (Regulation) Act, 1986, the government has ordered the fishermen using mechanized boats, not to conduct fishing in the seashores of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada districts during the said period, by using nets or such other equipments. Those violating the ban order have been warned of penal action.

“If any tragedies occur during the period of the ban, the concerned will be solely held responsible, and the government will not pay any relief or compensation. The mechanized boats which do not obey this ban, will lose subsidy, concession on the central excise and supply of diesel sans sales tax,” deputy director in the fisheries department, said.
