Udupi, Jun 11: There was a time when the glimpse of national bird peacock was quite rare to the coastal residents as they were mostly confined to their hilly forest habitat. Enthusiasts either enjoyed its beauty in zoos or at protected forests.
But over the years, deforestation has forced these peacocks to venture into the farmlands across the undivided Dakshina Kannada district.
They come to the farm mainly in search of food for survival. Owing to the peacock menace, the farmers are unable to harvest their crop because there is hardly anything left in the farmlands.
Although the people who come from other states enjoy viewing the influx of peacocks in many flocks, especially during the onset of monsoon season, the farmers try not to undertake farming. The Wildlife authorities need to somehow solve this problem and think of an alternative arrangement.
