Mangalore: New Terminal to be Functional in 10 days

MANGALORE, Jun 23 (The Hindu): Director of the Mangalore airport Peter Abraham has said that the new integrated terminal building of the airport will be opened for passenger traffic in the next 10 days.

Speaking to The Hindu on Tuesday, a month after the May 22 crash of the Air India Express flight from Dubai, Abraham said that the opening of the new terminal was scheduled for June 1. “But the circumstances that prevailed in the aftermath of the crash prevented us from opening the terminal,” he said.

The date of commissioning would be decided by the local authorities in consultation with the regional headquarters of the Airports Authority of India at Chennai. The only aspect that was currently holding up the opening was the construction of a standby road, which would take another week, Mr. Abraham said.

The 360-m road, which would provide an alternate passage to the airport, is being built at the south-east end of the airport, abutting the now-abandoned Dakkan Hotel. Built at a cost of Rs. 35 lakh, this road will connect the airport to the Bajpe main road, via the Kenjar gram panchayat. This road will be used in emergencies only. Otherwise, it will remain closed.

ILS functional

The Instrument Landing System at the airport has been repaired and reinstalled. The ILS could not be used after the plane crashed into one of its crucial components on May 22. The ILS was re-commissioned on June 16, Mr. Abraham said.

Salvaging the wreck

There is still no clarity on when the wreckage of the plane will be removed from the crash site. While Mr. Abraham said that it was the responsibility of the airline to conduct the salvage, Station Manger of Air India Chellam Prasad said that the airline did not have the written clearance from the Airports Authority of India to go ahead. Mr. Abraham said that the airline was free to build a temporary shelter, next to the old engineering office near the new terminal building, whenever it wished.

Before opening the new terminal of bajpe the customs authority of mangalore should be given training how the mumbai customs deal with passengers who is coming from abroad after working for one or 2 years and bring some gifts for their relatives. why i am writing this comment because i have seen one notice prepared in a computer and stick to the wall near the screening machine that " 10,000 rupees gold and 20,000 rupees gold is allowed to male and female respectively. i want to know at present how much gold can buy from 10 thousand and 20 thousand rupees. there is another practice when the bagage comes from the aircraft and enters to a screening machine and one labour is to mark different colors on the carton or baggage by chalk. i like to know what color gives indications to the custom officer to stop the passenger.
thank God that very few foriegnors enter india through bajpe airport otherwise they will feel strange about our customs.

Why all are considering it as New Terminal. Please understand it is not a new terminal. Only building is new which is called as new terminal building and rest of things such as run ways, Air Traffic Single everything is previous ones. Unless we new latest technologically advances run way is built and landing and ascending arrangements by way lengthening the runway is made it is not use whatever improvement you make. It is like new packing with olde stuff inside.

Good news for all the passengers who are ready to use. The authority should take care of others lives as much as we take care of ourselves. Nobody should leave it on Almighty to decide.

Mr Abraham please stop giving dates every now & then. We the manglorians are not intrested in your dates & new terminal. If we can use still the old terminal what was the use of accquiring the land of the poor people & building the new terminal? Secondly if the road is not yet ready why then the terminal was inagurated a week before the Air crash? if the road under construction is only for emergency purpose what makes you to start the new terminal? we are not giving the importance to the safety standards rather we give importance to finish the emergency road which will be kept close untill another disater takes place on the newly constructed approach road to the new terminal. Mahan ho Mr Abraham let the people die first then we will decide to open the new emergency road. How many more lives you guys require to wake up? Whats the scene of the run way extension Mr Abraham. I believe its important for us to emphasise on extension of run way & otehr safety measures to get in place than functioning of new terminal. Keep it for the mninisters usage, They might enjoy the new ambiance. We want safety first. Get the run way extension done with your sincere efforts Mr Abraham orelse resign & go. Show your respect to those who died a month back.

It is rather surprising that the terminal is inaugurated but not functional. These officials should be taken to task for this. It reflects on all the dignitaries that were present to inaugurate the terminal.

What is the use of new terminal without the state of the art infrastructure? I am sure the user fees are going to go up substantially once the new terminal is open.

The much awaited new modren terminal at Mangalore airport is all set to inaguration. The inauguration was earlier slated to be held in May 15, but was called off due to Air India crash. The Director of Mangalore Airport Mr.Peter Abraham said the exact date for inauguration of the new terminal building is being worked out, but it will take place very soon this month end. Atleast we will have a beautiful modern airport in Mangalore. I am asking Civil Aviation Minister Mr. Praful Patel to take steps to as 'Mangalore International Airport' instead of Mangalore Airport. Now we also expecting more flights from Gulf countries. Mr. Patel must allow foreign airlines to transit through Mangalore Airport.

Instead of giving attention to the terminal please level the deep valley of kenjar and ganjimata so that the risk of landing of flights solved of table top airport or extend to the city side.Till now no news from black box which is sent to America even though great scientist and discoverer (Phd) were in India. We want to listen the critical position of victims(passenger) and Capt.Zlatko Glusica, Capt H.S. Ahluwalia (Go around go around not be land very very sad and rememberable words of the First Officer) Mohamed Ali Crew, Yugnatar Sujata Siddharth Survase and Tejal Anil Kamulkar who completed the exactly four months on the day of tragedy) May ALLAH give peace to all bodies of all victims Now most of the passenger were afraid to land Mangalore Table top airport from Terminal II DXB.
