Kundapur: Adversity Inspires Farmer to Turn Inventor

Kundapur: Adversity Inspires Farmer to Turn Inventor

Daijiworld Media Network—Kundapur (RD/CN)

Kundapur, Jul 27: Forty-five-year-old Chandra Acharya, a farmer residing at Beejady, near here, is the inventor of a unique implement.

He has designed a plough and yoke to be pulled by a pair of men so as to till his paddy field when faced with an acute shortage of oxen and buffaloes. Unavailability of rental tillers which are heavily booked during the monsoon, is another factor which led to this unique invention.

Chandra Acharya has 1.5 acres of farmland and had faced shortage of labour during the monsoon last year. It was very difficult to get farm hands to undertake necessary tasks such as paddy cultivation, plant saplings, etc.

During his spare time, Acharya designed a plough and yoke that can be pulled by two men instead of oxen or buffaloes. His background as an expert blacksmith and welder enabled him to come up with this innovative design.

Acharya began to plough a small patch of paddy field with the help of his comrades Shekar Madivala and Raju Marakala, who held the yoke on either side and pulled along. They completed the tilling in four and a half hours and began planting the saplings. The three of them plan to similarly plough the rest of the farmland owned by Acharya.

“It is difficult to get farm hands; even if one is willing to pay more wages. I have gone through immense trouble to find labourers and oxen. I have realized that if I wait to get farm hands, I will not be able to undertake farming at all,” said Acharya.

Acharya is not in a position to rear any oxen or buffaloes as he has a small holding. The rental tillers in the neighbourhood are booked through the season.

I congratulate for the invention of Mr. Acharya. But where are we going! Going back to old stone age? What is this? The world adanced so much that human are using to plough the land? Government should look after the farmers difficulties to cultivate the lands like providing them modern plouving machines, even by loan and from do-operative banks finanical aid.Of coures Govt should help the poor farmers. We say ourselves India developing? Govt plan out some financial aid to cultivate the land by farmers.

    "Necessity is the mother of
invention". Mr. Acharya's invention is a modified plow
    with less resistance while
plowing the muddy land is a
    commendable invention.

But, using human beings to pull
the plough is a step going backward
in life. Sombeody in the engineering field must work him
to create a motorized and less
    expensive device to replace the
    human beings.

The acute shortage of man power
    in agriculture is causing the
    productivity of farmland in
    critical shortage. A compact
device to plough the land can
    create a great revolution.

Wish him all the best wishes.

    Dear Clara

I have no problem in understanding your message, as it is straight and honest and I have nothing against dear Felix too.

I always felt that any message irrespective of grammar could be simple enough not to use words that has a negative impact to the readers.

Last IAHA-2010 Singapore -conference I had a previlege of listening to a paper on the Agricultural development of a tiny village of Punjab. The paper points to a total development which is amazing. No more tiny patches of land as fences have vanished and people respect for land to grow more. Houses are no more in clusters, but within the farm to focus on agriculture, etc etc. Only flaw is the growing male population as MTP (Terminatio of Pregnancy if child is a female) is common. Lassi consumption is only 4% as people are tasting tea etc.,

As dear Lydia pointed, the problem is none other than ourselves. Government has schemes, but our people are non receptive. One should be opportunistic to avail and demand. Without demand no supply, and without supply demand is of no use.

Key message I see is "use positive energy and see positive". If we point at looters, somebody else's wealthy style etc, we are turtled.

History says that Manjarouth port (Mangalore) exported Teak and a kind of herbal wood to Arab through vessels. Rice, Areca, Coconut etc were grown abundant. 17th cent Arab traveller notices 60 vessels packed with Iron ores in Bhatakala.

It is the same thing we do but no reforms.

Mr.Gilson, the message by Mr.Felix is loud and clear that we are going backward by taking the place of the animals. The word dignity you can take it positively or negatively its upto you. When the politicians looting the country in millions then it is correct to say they are looters.

Our politicians don't want to spend countries wealth and people's tax money for the growth of the country. They don't want spend on agriculture, sports, roads, education, employment etc. Read the comments by Congress MP Aiyar, a nominated Rajya Sabha member-"Personally, I will be unhappy if the Commonwealth Games are successful, if they are successful, they will further organise Asian Games and other events I will be happy if the Games are spoilt. Just imagine if we would have spent the Rs35,000 crore in providing training to the children, we would have won medals in every international sporting event-Gulf News, July 28.

    Blan,

You may have an idea as to what changes the green revolution brought to NORTH Indian agricultural sector - it changed India into an exporter of wheat from importer of it. Modern equipments/technology replaced manual gadgets/methods. Why have the same changes were not brought to Southern part of the country ? I tell you why - we are more interested in making ours states known as silicon city originators. We divided larger lands into small patches, planted areca/coconut plants and gave ourselves up to rolling beedis.

The result is boost to mouth cancers (by chewing areca with beedas) and inhaling smell of beedi-tobacco while rolling them. At the same time our agricultural officers oozed off in their offices and took home the salaries for doing nothing and dumped the fertilizers or agri-related govt-granted products in abandoned wells. We the youth on the other hand either flew to Gulf countries to be slaves there or partly worked/partly roamed the streets at home.

Who is to be blamed now except ourselves ? We are ashamed of working in the fields and when some worked in them, educated girls refused to marry them. Its just like burying our heads in the sand. Accordingly the legal constraints apply too - they do not permit a citizen without agricultural background to buy an agricultural land.

South India surely needs reforms, to return to our basic production the agriculture. Else, we may some day have to eat keyboard, motherboard, etc.

I understand the frustruation of the farmers and the lack of technology in our indian agriculture system and dependency on the mansoon and failure to provide farmers water supply, financial aid, fertilizer and also proper knowledge of the soil by government sector agriculture institutes of india. This has led to inefficient way of farming. For high harvest farming PH level of the soil, soil lime, fertilizer ratio(nitrogen, phospate and potash), micronutrients, light and water are the basic essentials and important factors required for a successful harvest. so deep ploughing is required for the growth of roots and development of a stronger stem in order to produce high yeild. India has played an important role in the development of information and technology but why are we lacking in using that information and technology in a proper way with less effort. if you consider the picture shown the importance is not at all given to human being in this invention. we are still wasting our energy and life. ox and buffalao are replaced by human being. Why do we still think of living like slaves. let us use our energy in a better way and be incredible. just imagine where are we leading our life backward or forward. In united states husband and wife can complete farming(tilling, seeding, fertilizing) 40 acres of land within 3 to 4 days. government of usa provides farmer water supply, fertilizer, education, technology, financial help and support.

    Nelson, Karkala/Riyadh,

There is a method of sowing seeds in thin layers (Vompchen) after which they are not plucked and planted again. This process will reduce labour demand.

As you and Gilson noticed and I did too, this tool has three plough heads (or, are there four ?) When a pair of animals takes just one 6" of width ploughed in one circling, this tool will make nearly four times more. Obviously the time taken to prepare the soil will be less, energy & resources used less. We are indeed modernizing the ploughing process through this tool.

Regarding Clara's justification, the very feeling whirls around me is :

Half of the problem arises due to Provocative or stressful words in the message such as dignity of labour, misuse of wealth etc And also the disregard to ones work.

The other half of the problem is the way people interprete things and making the original message ambiguous, foggy and forming a group of supporters or opposers.

Anyway, this is where our democratic India is struggling (too many parties, too many variations).

While I appreciate the efforts on the part of Acharya to improvise his ploughing method, I see the plough is still to be pulled and dragged - only that, now by the human beings, instead of the animals earlier, and so, I don`t see much of an invention - only that there is some modification/improvisation on the plough as such. Had there been some sort of motor/machine fitted on to the plough, like, as is done in the case of the lawn mover or mechanical tiller, thus eliminating or minimising the hard physical labour, it would have been a different matter. I tend to agree with the comments of Felix F in this regard - we are in a way de-humanising by use of men to drag the plough, (no offence intended to Acharya and his men) and going backwards in that respect, after all, I wonder, how many people will come forward to undertake such hard job - I am sure, the wages should be really good!. For lack of non-availability of farm labour and rice cultivation being too laborious, expensive (raising and maintaining the oxen and buffaloes etc) and economically unviable, my family during the past 15 - 20 years moved away from rice to areca cultivation. Unfortunately, though, even areca cultivation in the recent past is becoming economically unviable because of the shortage of farm labour and the poor pricing structure. As Felix says, it`s high time Government comes in and find ways to help the farming lot in any way so that they can sustain themselves and carry on with their profession.

Metal (Conductor) price and Semi-conductor (processed silicon) are two different elements of a periodic table. Metal prices are always linerarly upward, and semi-conductors have shown even exponential decay in pricing. So, is Tata steel, mittal,SAIL are index deciders in the trade.

35$ price tag of a tablet is not a comparison to the tractors. BTW, the tractor renting is common now a days (in capacity to earth movers to flatten the terrain). Bulldozers, escavators etc were the white elephants only seen by the defence sector, now seen commonly in public domain. And these metallic engines are not cheaper but affordable by the society now a days. Paying rent is just an option and better than having oxens.

Having farmed and taken care of two pairs bullock-cart and bullocks long ago, I know that renting a tiller is in-expensive for big land holders. For a person having a tiny land and if the land is wet type, then these kind of instruments would suffice if one has energy, patience and passion to till the land.

Inventions are inventions even if one calls it otherwise. Even with the auto-grinders-choppers around, knife is still being used in the kitchen. So, if one modifies it to be efficient it is her/his innovation.

BTW, you may be wrong to say agriculture sector is ignored in India. There are human issues as well such as mis-using subsidies etc., That is why India is incredible. Please review the post-independence stat of irrigation, energy, etc, Thx

It appears you failed to understand the jist of my comments.

After 60 years of indipendence, when India hopes to be a superpower, put a man on the moon, Amabani`s could gift a luxury plane to his wife, we feel ourselves happy and proud, that a farmer had to invent a tool, to put himself in the place of a animal or a equipment ??

I do not know how much of farm experience, you posses, but I do. Years back (35 years to be near) When the Govt was working for the development of the small farmers, "Krishi" tractors were introduced. Hand held tractors, which were meant exactly to help small farmers like Acharya, who would find it difficult to get oxen/farm labour and could not use regular tractors due to lack of finance, and small lands which made tractors uneconomic and unaccessible.

Due to industrial sector getting more attractive and youth from villages, leaving farmlands & going to towns and cities, for work, the needs of farmers have been completely forgotten.

The way India's Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal introduced $35 computer to help students, if ministers involved in development of agriculture, could develop tractors like Krishi, at affordable rates with good performence, then, iventions involving human physical labour could have been avoided. I still cannot understand how you feel happy of this invention inspite of the photos showing the way, in which these farmers have to use them.

Congrats Mr. Acharya for your unique invention. Who said degrees are essential for invention, you are a true model to prove that God has given equal wisdom and knowledge to every human created. I earnestly pray that your your genuine invention gets copy righted so that no one else can claim credence. Reading the comment "An invention at the cost of human dignity" I feel like laughing at the commentor. With so much unemployment, people turning to evil and wicked ways of looting, thieving, cheating, fraud, is this not a dignified way of providing a living to the helpless unemployed people.

Imagine having cattle for the purpose and the cost involved for their daily care and feed. Their service is required seasonally, rest of the time they are a burden on the poor farmers. These men helping Mr. Acharya will not only earn their daily bread in a dignified way, but will be able to provide for their families too.

It is easy for us people, pampered with fat salaries and all comforts and luxuries in the gulf to comment. Do we really look into the hardship of the helpless farmers and their families in providing us our luxury meals at our dinner table. I wonder how many people commenting here, watched the TV program "Saalakondu Savaal" where the problems and woes of the farming community was highlighted, those that watched am sure their eyes were damp seeing and hearing the stories of innocent farmers who committed suicide due to severe problem. Innovative idea by Mr. Acharya who cannot afford to keep oxen or hire tillers. His pathetic status with regard to facilities for tilling his fertile farm shows the apathy that has hit the agriculture field. No doubt as Sebastian has said the time is not far off where food items will become more costlier than electronic gadgets and maybe people will have to eat notes.....!!!

Can anybody imagine moong dal price at Rs. 120 per kg, tomatoes 50, beans 100......the day is not far off where people will start buying vegetables/food items in multiples of 10gms from today's 250 gms (pav killo)!!!

However the issue of non availability of oxen or bedfellows and loss of fertility of soil due to non use of those animals is a important topic for community discussion. Feeding and caring for the rest of the year is not a small job. All they produce is manure which can be done by cows who give milk. At the same time, hiring a tiller is expensive and it uses fuel and emits pollutants.

    Dear Felix, KSA

With a technical education cert, whether it is BE or ITI or Dipl, one gets a professional job at middle east or elsewhere.

With a trading or biz background, one gets into trade or biz, where trading is never 100% honest.

A person with or without good educational requirement, sometimes get into various professions such as driver, plumber, repairer, artisan etc due to the skill attained.

A farmer who has a patch of land, and who cant afford commercial tillers or domesticated buffalloes, ends up in designing his custom tiller and innovates to fulfil his goal.

Some enterpreuners such as Reddy brothers are experts in extracting money through their mining biz. Whether it is legal or illegal - has to be decided by the judiciary and be punished if proves a loot. But then they are not the only duos.

When a humble welder cum farmer designs a till - it is never an invention from your view ? Perhaps you have a better pool of inventions to disregard this.

Anyway, why mix Reddys with this topic and pollute the innovative method of Acharya ?

oxen or buffaloes, and other cattles are very very necessary for farmers. we Indians usually cultivate, use all parts of its plant, EXAMPLE rice- we take paddy, plant use as fodder ( bihullu/ bathen) Even Root some people used as -firewood to boil water. ABOVE METHOD,IF YOU CULTIVATE 2-3 years what manure will be there ? ( soil composition ) artificial( chemical) is no use. Here when i saw Mr Acharys Team in the picture- My mind picture goes to those people African Slaves. How they built JERUSALEM. Brought those big stones. This method is NOT suitable. NOT to encourage. If continues
    1.poor people suffer
    2. soil looses its fertility, so the land become barren.
    3. cattles will not be there.
    4. No Agriculture.
5.birds, butterflies, and bees become extinct.
land erotion.climate warm.( global warming )
