Kundapur, Jul 29: Meet 47-year-old Joseph Rebello, a native of Vaderahobli residing on Nana Saheb Road, here, who has carved a modest life for his family with just one hand. With his life he has shown the world that one can make the best of adversity to make a decent living.
Rebello is the son of Philip and Fiad Rebello couple and made it to Gulf in 1992. He was employed as a driver in a Gulf country, when the tragedy struck. He lost his hand an electrical mishap while working in a building site. The tragedy shattered his dream of providing a decent living for his elderly parents, his wife and two children.
However, Joseph returned to his native in 1993 and slipped into depression over his physical disability for a while only to be motivated by his wife despite entire family found itself hard to
sustain their daily living. Mary ventured out of the house, in order to work as daily wager, as she had the greater responsibility to care for their two children. Her struggle for survival inspired hope in Joseph, to face the challenges of life with grit and confidence.
He contemplated on beginning a new life with just one hand. Soon he bought a second hand truck, but tragedy struck again, in the form of death of the cleaner employed by him in his truck. The tragedies that followed one after the other disheartened him totally. Yet again he recovered from major setbacks and determined to earn a living and support the family.
He began peddling bottles of disinfectant and snacks in a bicycle from a distributor and began earning commissions. With this income, he provided for the education of his children and meet daily expenses.
His son Melvin Rebello is studying in Class IX at St Mary’s High School, here, while his daughter Juliet Rebello is studying in II PUC at a nearby college. Although, he needs huge sum of money to take care of the education of his children, he has never asked for help and earned himself.
‘When I was well-off, I was surrounded by many people, but now none as I hardly make ends meet. So far I have held onto my self-respect,’ says Joseph. He has carved out a living from his small earning, while Mary supplements the family income by working in a kitchen of mid-day free meal at nearby school.
