Mangalore, Aug 9: “Students should be allowed to take up academic subjects of their choice as that helps them excel in their life and take up their studies seriously. However that does not happen as most of the parents impose subjects on their children. Their choice is never taken into consideration,” said S S Nayak, Chartered Accountant.
He was addressing the gathering during a programme organized to honour students belonging to GSB community for taking high marks in their respective subjects. The programme was organized jointly by GSB Seva Samaj and GSB Yuvaka Vranda at CV Nayak hall here.
“Parents should train their children to be independent and not be dependent on others. They should see to it that their children will reach up to a stage where people will work under them,” said Nayak. “Similarly students should set their goals higher and also strive to achieve those goals.” he added.
He also called upon the students to take administrative services such as IAS, rather than just limiting their scope in pursuing engineering or medicine, as the country was run by bureaucrats and not politicians. “Indian education system is one of the best in the country, thus more and more students should opt for Indian universities rather than foreign universities," he added.
“We are giving importance to wealth economy than welfare economy. The GSB samaj should take up welfare activities like building hostels for students hailing from economically poor families,” Nayak said. “In the olden days there were followers but no leaders. But now there are leaders but not followers,” lamented Nayak. He said that more and more youth should come forward and take up activities for the welfare of their community.
“When opportunities come knocking we must take it,” said Dr K Mohan Pai, noted cardiologist. Dr Pai also said that once the opportunities come, students should safeguard it. The students who were honoured should see to it that they will honour other students in the future.
Vishwanath Bhat of Seva Samaj outlined the various welfare activities taken by their organizations.
The programme was presided over by Dr U Mohandas Nayak, president, Canara High School Association (CHSA). The chief guests were H Santosh Gadiyar, businessman, B Narayan Shenoy, former president, CHSA, Manjunath Shenoy, trustee, Veera Venkatesh chariatable trust (VVCA), Ganapathi Pai, trustee, VVCA and Yogesh Acharya, chief manager, Canara Bank, Dongerkeri Branch among others.
