Mangalore, Aug 9: As a part of its continuing action plan, an awareness week on Solid waste management’ has been organized by the department of commerce, St Agnes College (Autonomous), from Monday August 9 to Friday August 13.

An Oath Taking Ceremony by the members of the executive committee of the campaign was held on the occasion. Anjali Rao of III B Com compered the programme. The reading of vison, mission and action plan was done by B Com students Supreetha, Melora and Akanksha.

Sr Marie Prem D'Souza, the principal of the college delivered her message and declared open the awareness week. Dr Devi Prabha Alva, staff co-ordinator of the programme welcomed the gathering and Shilpa Shetty proposed the vote of thanks.  This was followed by an awareness rally inside the campus at 12.00 noon.

Unfortunately the issue of Solid Waste Management has become a challenge. It is a common site that garbage is thrown out everywhere without any civic sense, which causes serious health hazards both to human beings and animals. The fact is population living in the urban area produces much more solid waste than in the rural area. In this regard, the immediate need of the hour is to create awareness and to educate people about the importance of effective management of solid waste.

Hence, the students of St Agnes have taken up this sensitive issue as its extension activity.  It can be recalled that a Community Awareness Campaign (CAC) on Solid Waste Management (SWM) was inaugurated at the college by the Mangalore City Corporation commissioner Dr Vijay Prakash on March 23.

    All across India, solid wate
accumulation is a chronic problem, especially in mega cities. Recently, over 1000 young people
took the initiative in New Delhi
    to address this social problem.

Somebody has to take the first
step in any venture. Congrtulations to St. Agnes college
in taking that first and important
    step. Thanks to the Daijiworld
    for the detailed coverage.

This problem is very serious in
    the monsoon season.

Commendable job done by the students of St. Agnes College, Mangalore. Hats off! But it shouldn’t stop here. There are many organizations in Mangalore belongs to different religions, communities, groups. They should join their hands with the students.
I learned in the same website that people are hesitant to pay a minimum amount of RS 30 per house per month to collect the waste by municipality. It is very true that urban areas produce more waste than the rural areas. The more they get educated, the more they become careless.

Very good initiative from the students of St Agnes college. This action should not stop here.
I remember someone said in Daiji, people are hesitant to pay a mare amount of RS 30 per month per house for collecting the garbage in Mangalore city. How much they spend for cigarettes, pan etc per day? But Why not for hygene?
The so called social, community organizations should join in this campaign. Educated people in the urban area are more careless than uneducated people in the rural area.

WOW...What an amazing move...fabulous thinking and God bless all who participated in it. I salute St. Agnes management for the support they have extended to their college students and it is wonderful to gather one in in bluemoon for a good cause. Hats off to all teens and I pray to Almighty for a better health and to grant them the brillient brain in their studies to take the name and fame in future. Liked the photography most by Dayanand (as always I appreciate his work and am a fan of him too) in particular a teen who is 2nd seen from left side in 22nd photograph. It does not mean other are put up in corner in my point of view she is photogenic. Congrats and Cheers.

nice to see that some one is aware of solid waste.with more packaged goods in the market its going to increase the waste materials.with affluence comes this stigma of solid waste but we in India are still lacking the proper infrastructure for waste management, hope the govt takes serious not of this.the public should be made aware of this grassroots level thru education ,exhibition etc.some serious laws have to passed fines imposed that way we achieva a better result.
