Bangalore, Aug 10: In an obvious attempt to woo the Christian community, which is cheesed off with the BJP regime in Karnataka after a series of attacks against churches in Mangalore, Bangalore and other places in 2008, chief minister B S Yeddyurappa rode straight to the official residence of Bangalore Archbishop Dr Bernard Moras to greet him on his 69th birthday soon after returning from Delhi.
After offering garland, fruits and a shawl to the Archbishop, the chief minister spent some time with the president of the Karnataka Region Bishops’ Council in discussion.
The chief minister had gone to Delhi leading a delegation to meet President Pratibha Patil to request her to give early assent to the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Bill and later to meet BJP national president Nitin Gadkari and other national leaders. He also attended a core committee meeting of BJP. He had stayed back on Monday August 9 and returned to Bangalore in the evening.
Talking to reporters after the meeting with Archbishop, the chief minister warmly appreciated the services of Dr Moras in the fields of social service, education and care for the poor.
Yeddyurapa assured that the government was committed to providing security to all citizens, especially the minorities. He urged the minorities to join the mainstream and take full advantage of the developmental programmes and welfare schemes of the government.
