Yeddyurappa Greets Archbishop Moras on his 69th Birthday

Bangalore, Aug 10: In an obvious attempt to woo the Christian community, which is cheesed off with the BJP regime in Karnataka after a series of attacks against churches in Mangalore, Bangalore and other places in 2008, chief minister B S Yeddyurappa rode straight to the official residence of Bangalore Archbishop Dr Bernard Moras to greet him on his 69th birthday soon after returning from Delhi.

After offering garland, fruits and a shawl to the Archbishop, the chief minister spent some time with the president of the Karnataka Region Bishops’ Council in discussion.

The chief minister had gone to Delhi leading a delegation to meet President Pratibha Patil to request her to give early assent to the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Bill and later to meet BJP national president Nitin Gadkari and other national leaders. He also attended a core committee meeting of BJP. He had stayed back on Monday August 9 and returned to Bangalore in the evening.

Talking to reporters after the meeting with Archbishop, the chief minister warmly appreciated the services of Dr Moras in the fields of social service, education and care for the poor.

Yeddyurapa assured that the government was committed to providing security to all citizens, especially the minorities. He urged the minorities to join the mainstream and take full advantage of the developmental programmes and welfare schemes of the government.

Well done Mr. CM...this is good gesture from you sir. You deserve to be CM more than Reddy's. After all you sat in the oppsosition for 30yrs and you won the election, you deserve to complete full 5yrs. Don't neglect anybody of your state based on thier religion but continue to serve the people who voted for you.

Reddys are not happy with Yeddy & now CM feels the heat. Now he has realised that the support of minority is vital. All these years, especially during budget he never remembered Christians. Now, he has remembered that Christians exists in Karnataka. 'Ab aaya oont Pahad ke neeche'. Good move CM sir. 'Love & care everyone but never neglect anyone'.

Felix, though I agree with your comments to certain extent, I also maintain that politicians do not walk an extra mile if there is no gain. None of politicians will do it ever. Yeddy for sure knows what mess he is into and practically he has been at loggerheads with Christian community eversince he assumed charge.

Moreover in the last two years he has surely learnt how tough customer our Archbishop is. A person who could show the door to the CM of state surely is not a simple personality. It needs a lot of calibre and integrity of mind and heart. Today more than the Archbishop or Christians need Yeddy or for that matter the party he represents, Yeddy surely wants to be in the good books of Christians. It's a welcome step indeed that he knows that each and every community or citizen of this state is equally important to him. Hope this move inspires to his other colleagues too so that they reach out to everyone.

Hi Felix F., India/Ksa, what is the personal or professional relationship that your Catholic Archbishop of Bangalore could have with CM Yeddyurappa? Is the Archbishop in mining business or organising Samaveshas all over the State? When a BJP CM like Yeddyurappa meets a Catholic Archbishop, who had openly ticked him off soon after the series of church attacks in 2008, can you find any other motives? Why didn't the same CM or any prominent BJP ministers or other leaders did not greet the Archbishop in the past? Definitely there is a political angle & it is nothing but an attempt to woo the Christians. It is obvious to everybody. Why does not the same CM, who has personal or professional friendship with Archbishop, accept the invitation to attend Christmas get-together organised by the Archbishop? Did he ever do it in the past?

Is it a must for a Journalist to play on the sentiments of the people by bringing in religion for every avaialble situation. Is it necessary to mention that CM's action was only to woo the Christian community..??

It could have been just some personal/professional friendship between the two which made the CM to greet the Archbishop on his birthday, and very little to do the religion part of it
