Mangalore, Aug 16: The traffic cones that are placed in the city especially to avoid the menace of parking on non-parking zones seem to have no desired effect only costing department’s ex-chequer.
Introduced in the city after its successful usage in Bangalore, it has been helpful incase of lessen hassles in parking two-wheelers and small vehicles. Yet successful implementation by large has been marred by damage to the cones in several areas caused by four-wheelers, especially the heavier vehicles which is a matter of concern to the department.
Speaking to Daijiworld, traffic inspector Manjunath Shetty said that for the parking of four-wheelers the department is planning to mark the parking area with striking paints. Initially the idea of introducing traffic cones was for safety of pedestrians and to enable smooth parking of two-wheelers and smaller four-wheelers. Moreover, now with damages to these cones, the areas where they are positioned will be meant exclusively for the parking of two-wheelers. The public need to co-operate with the department, he urged.
Gurudath Kamat, sub-inspector, traffic west-2 said that lot of plans for the safety of vehicle users and pedestrians are in the pipeline but rain is the main hindrance now. Once the rains subside, the plans of building pedestrian drills and other safety measures can be easily implemented, he added.
When asked whether the department is planning to man the area where traffic cones are placed, he said that there is a shortage of staff at present but with setting up of commissionerate in the city the staff requirement may also be soon fulfilled, he hoped.
Traffic cones, also called traffic pylons, road cones, highway cones or safety cones are usually cone-shaped markers that are placed on roads or footpaths to temporarily redirect traffic in a safe manner.
