Mangalore, Aug 25: The rains continued unabated on Wednesday August 24 too, with the city and Moodbidri registering 14 cms respectively. The rains also continued to hit on Wednesday night. Temperatures have plummetted, and the people were seen shivering and trying to cover themselves up to ward off chill, an uncommon scene in the coast. Almost all the places on the west coast received rains ranging between seven and ten cms.

Several houses and cattle sheds in the twin-districts collapsed due to incessant rains, causing losses to the tune of over a lac of rupees on their owners. Several trees were uprooted, snapping power supply to several villages and towns. A student named Minuta (8), daughter of Anand Lakshambeedu, student of Kallarkody lower primary school in Bantwal taluk, drowned in the standing water of a stone quarry at Bavaliguri in Vorkady panchayat while returning from school on Wednesday evening.

Landslides created traffic bottlenecks at several village roads. Rivers Netravati and Kumaradhara are overflowing. Because of heavy rains, traffic moved very slowly. The rain has also created an apprehension of rotting disease afflicting the areca nut crops in the coast.

Normal to heavy rains have been predicted for the next two days in the coast.
