Petrol prices breach Rs 100-mark barrier in DK, Udupi; common man feels the pinch

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP/DV)

Mangaluru, Jun 19: Petrol prices crossed Rs 100 mark for the first time in a few places in the twin-districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada on Friday June 18.

Petrol prices which were hovering near the century mark for the last some weeks, broke the barrier on Friday. Petrol which cost Rs 99.91 a litre in Sullia on June 17 reached Rs 100.19 on Friday June 18. In Kundapur taluk also, the price crossed the century mark and was sold for Rs 100.07 a litre at some places and Rs 100.04 in others. The rates differ on the basis of distribution fee.

Petrol was sold at Rs 100 in Ujire and Rs 100.26 in Kokkada. In the city, petrol cost Rs 99.30 on Friday while diesel was sold for Rs 92.20 a litre. During the last three weeks, petrol went up by Rs 2.53 a litre and diesel by Rs 2.45. Petrol price at Bantwal was Rs 99.58 and Rs 99.71 in Udupi. Diesel was sold in Udupi for Rs 92.52 a litre.

Anand Karnad, secretary of Karnataka State Petroleum Dealers Federation, noted that the petrol price may retain the upward trend for a few more days now, as crude oil prices are going up in the international market. He opined that the government should review its excise duty on petrol.

As the public is struggling to come out of the aftermath of lockdown following to pandemic, the sharp rise in fuel prices has started impacting the common man and resulted in the hike of prices of essential commodities.

Following the lockdown, several commercial establishments have remained shut, people are suffering without jobs, and several companies have fired employees due to the impact on the economy. The hike in fuel prices has added more burden while the common man is juggling to make ends meet in these hard times.

Santhosh, who travels from BC Road to Mangaluru to work in a company said, "The lockdown has destroyed the life of common man. I have to travel daily from Mangaluru to BC Road and I need to spend Rs 100 for fuel. I am striving hard to feed my family".

Roshan, who works for a private company said, “Party politics have to be set aside right now and everyone has to remind PM Modi the promises he made before coming to power. It is time to remind all these gentlemen all they said while in the opposition. Strangely, the fuel prices go down during elections and rise after the results of the polls. I feel having paid the price voting to realise the great dream of ‘Acche Din’.”

The hike in fuel prices have made an adverse impact on the common man's life as the price for the essential commodities is increasing gradually. A majority of the section is opposing the union and state government's taxation on fuel.

It may be recalled that a man in Dakshina Kannada district was trolled after his audio clip went viral saying that he would support Prime Minister Narendra Modi, though the fuel price shoots up to Rs 1,000 per litre.

I challenge the Congress to sell petrol at @75. ok let them put it in their manifesto for 2024. Congress is a spent force cannot really challenge the Government. So let the Mahaghatbandan of regional parties have it in their manifesto let us see. if the Mahaghatibandan cannot bring it to RS. 75 let them wind up and go. it is a challenge go for it if you have guts. An inflation of 5% since 2014 will bring the petrol price to Rs. 100 from Rs.75

The latest report says Indian' funds in Swiss bank is at a 13 year high with 20700 cr. In 2014 he said he will get all the black money back and deposit 15L in every citizens account. Instead looks like he did the opposite, loot every Indian and deposit it in Swizz bank.. Hence this fuel price rise even crude oil prices are low.

Vehicles are highly needed in these days. But we have to think of using public transport. In towns it is seen many cars running with only one passenger who himself is the driver! This kind of mentality of people must be self controlled. As a temporary measure govt can ease the problem by cancelling/reducing tax, but will it be a permanent solution? In near future, we will have pay ₹100+ for petrol evenif all taxes are cancelled! Whom will we blame during such period?

Mr. Bhat, You are right! People should start public transport. But, then EMIs on the car won't stop. People will still have to pay it, even if they don't use the car. Moreover, Petrol/Diesel is also used by trucks. These trucks are used to deliver products that we consume. When the price of Diesel goes up, so will the charges paid to transport the products. Which in turn increases the price of the products. Given this situation, Mr. Bhat, please advise us what should people do?

Mr.Prakash Mumbai, For your kind information/Knowledge, Price of the Petrol/Diesel not depends on International Marketing but increases due to heavy taxes by the Govt. Now crude oil rate USD 74/- per barrel. In UPA regime , Crud oil price was USD 145/- then the Govt. charged the Petrol rate Rs.70/- , so that time basic rate was Rs.48/- (Basic 48+ Taxes 22=Rs.70) As per current condition, the Basic Rate is Rs32/-, the Govt. charged Petrol rate Rs.103/- ( Basic 32+ Taxes 71=Rs.103/-) Now, you can see the difference, which Govt is working or bothered for the Common people IS THIS ACCHE DIN, ALL ESSENTIAL COMMODITIES PRICES ARE GOING UP. COMMON PEOPLE ARE SUFFERING & DYING BECAUSE OF HUNGRY NO JOB NO FOOD ETC THIS GOVT. IS BOTHERING ABOUT ONLY FOR POWER NOTHING ELSE?????? ONLY GOD CAN SAVE THIS COUNTRY FROM THIS PEOPLE.

Increase in fuel prices will directly increase prices of all commodities as it becomes costlier to transport them. andhbakths who don't understand logic and are ready to pay Rs 200 per litre for petrol ,be ready to feel the pinch when you buy essentials also. Like someone rightly said, we need 2 types of shops and petrol bunks with 2 different rates. One for andhbakths who are ready to pay anything, and other for rest of us with prices before modi came to power ..I would really like to see which shop andhbakths would enter and for how long.

Dear Jeevan, Kudla You are talking about now second time, the Price of Petrol in 1947 is 0.21 paise, who told this, your parents or grand parents ? if it is true, then what is the Salary of the person in 1947 is it Rs.3/ , Rs.4/ or Rs.5/- then what is the cost of Living that time. Think about this? Secondly, you are telling about cost of the Petrol in 2014 is Rs.85/- it is totally wrong, it was Rs.68/- or Rs.70/- Now, what was the Salary of the person ,is it RS.15000/- or Rs.25000/- son on. then we are paying Rs.70/- on petrol due to high price of Crud Oil that time was US$ 145/-, even though People in BJP like Smriti Irani, Shobha Karandlaje, Hema Malini etc etc many more people are protesting with Gas Cylinders for Rs.68/- on Petrol. Now these people are hiding in caves. When NDA came to power with promise of ACCHE DIN ,the price of the Petrol/Diesel started raising. Rs.85/- you are talking about was in NDA Govt. Now, Above R.100/- this is because of high taxes from Central & State Governments. So, hereafter please don't comments in rate of Petrol in 1947 or 2014
