Mangaluru: Heavy rain pounds coastal Karnataka, Kodagu

Mangaluru, Jul 14: Coastal districts of Karnataka including Dakshina Kannada and Udupi received good rainfall on Tuesday July 13.

A number of houses were damaged due to rain while the roof of a house belonging to Shivaram in Veerakambha village, Vittal, was blown away. Reports of a number of trees getting uprooted, some of them on roads, have been received. Mescom reported heavy losses due to the loss of electric poles, transformers and cables.

The meteorological department has issued orange alert for four days commencing from 8.30 am on July 14. During this period, rainfall between 115.5 mm to 204.4 mm may be received. Strong wind, thunder and lightning might accompany the rainfall. Sea waves may acquire more power and size, the department has predicted.

MLA Appachu Ranjan, who visited various places in Kodagu noted that the district is receiving heavy rain and the period is marked by chilly weather. He said that considering the rising level of rivers, people living near the riverbanks have been advised to shift to safer places. He added that National Disaster Response Force team is ready to tackle any eventuality.
