Kuwait Konkans And Salmiya-A Lift Kanajar Trophies

Kuwait, Dec 18: Kanajar Welfare Association, Kuwait (KWAK), hosted its maiden volleyball tournament for men and throw ball tournament for women, respectively, at the American International School’s indoor stadium, Maidan Hawalli. The event proved to be fun-filled and entertaining. A large crowd gathered to witness the best teams vying with each other to clinch the top honour, with a number of matches offering nail-biting finishes.
The mission of this association is to financially support Kanajar Poor Children’s Education Fund. Through this event, KWAK aimed to create an environment of sportsmanship spirit for girls, women, boys and men from the Indian community settled in Kuwait, irrespective of their age, caste, creed, religion, and culture. Besides, KWAK also wanted to provide them an opportunity to showcase their talents through this event.
It was an early start on a bright Friday December 17 morning, as seven throw ball teams and ten volleyball teams comprising both women and men from different walks of life, assembled at AIS grounds, Hawalli, to take part in the Kanajar Trophy 2010.
The inaugural of the event was conducted at 8 am by Dr Nuna Goel and Dr Mohan Das, along with event organizing committee’s office bearers, Leena Fernandes, Edward D’souza and Antony Miranda, who released colourful balloons in the air. Charlotte D’souza introduced the chief guest. President of the association, Henry Britto, and sports secretary, Robert D’souza, extended a warm welcome to the gathering as well as all the teams. As a gesture of love and appreciation, flower bouquets were handed over to guests by active members of KWAK.
The sponsors for the event were Dr Sneha Latha Goel, Royal Plaza Caterers, Raymond Park Avenue Centre, Ivan Mendes, Lawrence Saldanha, , Jenney’s Beauty Saloon, Robert D’souza and Clement Saldanha, Indian Delight restaurant, City Garage, Robert Menezes, Village Inn Restaurant, Shetty’s Grocery and Disney Mathias.
Ramesh (Indian Central School) and Satish (Integrated School) officiated as referees for the tournament. KWAK members functioned as line referees. The score board desk was manned by Charlotte D’souza and Jyothi Fernandes.
The exciting tournament boiled down to nail biting semi-finals between Starz and KVWA, and Kuwait Konkans and Al Rathath. The grand final of the Kanajar throw ball cup was won by Kuwait Konkans, who beat Starz. The runner-up spot went toDUBOP.

Best All-rounder: Seema Miranda from Kuwait Konkans, Best Smasher: Silvia D’Souza from Starz.
Golden Arm Service: Merlin Pereira from DUBOP.

Winner: Kunjal Friends, Runner-up: Salmiya-A, Second Runner-up: Norohna Brothers, Fourth place: Salmiya-C.

In the semifinal, Salmiya-A beat Noronha Brothers and Kunjal Frends beat Salmiya-C.
Best Lifter: Melwyn from Kunjal Brothers, Best All-rounder : Muben from Salmiya-A, Best Sriker: Swaroop, Salmiya-A.
Various sponsors distributed the prizes and individual awards to the winners. Melwyn thanked all the sponsors for their benevolence. He also thanked the participating teams, enthusiastic supporters, referees, line referees, and all the volunteers involved with the event.
KWAK ex-president, Melwyn Mascarenhas, was the master of ceremony. Walter, a popular figure in Kuwait, kept the spectators entertained with his live commentary of the matches.
