Mangaluru, Mar 4: Mangalore University here will be introducing a five-year MBA (health, safety and environment) and also a five-year MCom Business Data Analytics courses beginning from the next academic year.

At the academic council meeting of the university held on Friday March 4, approval was given for the syllabus and guidelines connected with these two courses.

Both these courses cover graduate and postgraduate degrees and are in tune with the National Education Policy. The five-year MCom course will help the students to conduct detailed study in data analytics. In the five years MBA, study which conforms to market needs will be possible, said vice chancellor of the university, Dr P S Yadapadithaya, who presided over the meeting.

The vice chancellor said that the students who have completed second PUC through the respective authorities, three years diploma, and one year diploma after the second PU and students who have completed PG diploma will be eligible to seek admission to the above courses.

An admission scrutiny committee has been formed. This committee will screen the admissions into the new courses. Yadapadithaya stated that the university plans to start at least ten new courses from the next year. He said that from the coming academic year, BSc degree course in fingerprint technology will be introduced in Mangalore University college and that a laboratory for the same would be developed.

The meeting also gave its nod for the guidelines connected with post-doctoral fellowship. The vice chancellor said that till now there were no guidelines from the university. He said that in the competitive world, opportunity has now been provided to undertake research independently. "The research scholars will be able to get involved full time with research. Those who have secured PhD degree or published research articles and acquired patents will be eligible for the same, he explained.

The meeting also gave approval to the list of 32 foreign students studying in the university. Most of these 32 students belong to Afghanistan. Four are from Yemen and one student is from China, Prof Yadapadithaya stated.

Yadapadithaya said that the meeting approved the amendment about starting postgraduate degree courses in affiliated colleges. He said that in line with the decision, colleges which are fully affiliated to the university or backed by a minimum of ten years affiliation with NAAC certificate alone would be allowed to open postgraduate degree courses. He said that for starting new colleges, a minimum of 0.5 acre land in urban areas, one acre in municipal and district headquarter limits, 1.5 acres in town panchayats or taluk centres or three acres in rural areas has been prescribed.

The university will be holding its convocation ceremony on April 16 where governor, Thawar Chand Gehlot, who happens to be the chancellor of the university, will be addressing the audience. He noted that the chancellors did not use to deliver speeches at the convocations in the past. He also revealed that Supreme Court judge, Justice S Abdul Nazeer, will be delivering the convocation address.
