Puttur, May 8: SDMC and teachers of Koila Government Higher Primary School are a role model to others as they have planted several arecanut saplings with the intention of making arecanut farms within the school campus.

Recently, the arecanut crop has generated good demand. So the school has decided to earn money through cultivationg of the arecanut and to use the funds from the sale proceeds of the commodity for the development of the school.

The saplings were planted under the leadership of Shashi Puthye, president of the school development committee. As many as 450 saplings of the arecanut  have been planted in the empty land that is adjoining the school playground.

In addition, 30 coconut saplings have also been planted around the school building. Watering of the plants is done with the help of the borewell of the school itself.

Locals of the village have also joined hands with the school development committee in this noble work. Progressive farmer Rama Naika Enithadka has provided around 500 arecanut plants of Mangala breed free from his nursery while Lingappa Gowda Kadembyalu has provided fertilisers in addition to cash aid. Entrepreneur Damodar Puthye has borne the expenses of electricity and pump shed construction.

Shashikumar Puthye says, “Arecanut plantation is done in school land with foresight. President of Koila gram panchayat Harshith Kumar and administrative committee and officials have cooperated in digging pits to plant the saplings under the MNREGA project. Education lovers of the village have contributed immensely.”

Lokesh C, zonal educational officer said, “The planting of arecanut saplings with the help of teachers, school development committee and donors is an excellent work. Other government schools of the taluk should follow the same.”

A very bad decision by local authorities. This is cash crop so there will be lot of movement of traffic of different kind around this grows and maintenance and subsequent danger to students free and safe movements. It’s not advisable to have this project inside school premises to appease votes at the cost of students lives and curriculums.

I think Arecanut plantation is a long time process, and not for school isnt a good investing .For the beginning better some vegetables ,fruits which can be sold or give early bring money was better.Children leave school early not long time be there .Beginner may take more interest in agriculture and might later will be too.Anyway wish them good luck.
