Kundapur, Jul 25: Incident of asking change for currency notes of bigger denomination and later returning the same with lesser amount has come to light at Thekkatte in the taluk.

Two strangers arrived at the prestigious cloth showroom of Thekkatte in the guise of customers and requested to give Rs 100 currency notes against five currency notes of Rs 2000 face value. The manager of the shop said that he does not have Rs 100 notes and gave them 20 notes of Rs 500.

A little while later, the shop was buzzing with customers. The strangers asked the manager to return five Rs 2000 notes back to them and take back the Rs 500 notes he gave them. When they returned, the amount is less by Rs 3,500 which the manager did not notice due to rush in the shop.

Later, the fraudsters visited a shop selling articles of Pooja and bought a bowl and gave Rs 2000 note. They took the change after paying for the bowl. However, a little later they arrived again to the shop and asked the owner of the shop to return the Rs 2000 note that they gave him. They said that auto rickshaw is waiting and the change is with the person sitting in auto and they will bring it. But they did not return at all.

It is learnt that a gang of Tamil Nadu origin comprising of men and women is doing this fraud. Police are trying to nab the gang.

One easy way to handle this problem is this: If some foul play is suspected, as soon as a person comes to do the exchange for the second time, first of all ask some two or three witnesses to stand by your side, then ask the person to hand over the money first, telling him or her that you will do the exchange after counting all the money, and start counting the money in front of the witnesses. This way the persons can be easily exposed.

The shop keeper is a fool to exchange the notes without the con people purchasing anything from the shop; common sense says that he should have immediately suspected foul play; this lack of common sense cannot be expected from a place considered to be educated and intelligent?

Fraudsters were there, are there and will be there... People must be very careful while dealing with cash.... They will be waiting for the prey... Shop keepers are always at maximum risk... General public must be very vigilant especially at ATMs... Never accept help from anyone while depositing large sums...
