Mangalore, Apr 23: The district administration plans to clean the 43 km-long coastline of Dakshina Kannada district on Sunday May 1 with the help of the public. This distance includes two corporations, three municipalities, and 23 villages.

In a meeting convened by deputy commissioner Subodh Yadav on Friday, it was decided to divide the coastline into five zones for the cleanliness drive. The inauguration will be done at Bengre at 7.00 am on Sunday May 1.

Yadav said that this cleanness drive should not be limited to one day, and is just an initiation by the district administration and the public should be aware of the future course of action.

Food and transportation will be provided for volunteers. MRPL has come forward to sponsor the event. The district administration expects 5,000 people to participate in the cleanliness drive, and various groups have been set up for this purpose.

A district-level official and a village-level official will be deputed to each zone to ensure smooth execution of the cleanliness drive. Necessary equipment like baskets (bins), gloves, caps, jute bags, and reusable plastic bags will be given by the corporation to volunteers.

Additional DC Prabhakar Sharma, and Panambur beach development project CEO Yathish Bykampady were present along with other officials.

Marvellous idea indeed on the part of those who have come forward to clean up the 43 km long beach of Mangalore District Coastline. We are sure that MRPL will be supported by many other Corporations because our clean beaches will bring additional environmental awareness not only for cleaner beaches but also cleaner oceans too. Our Coast Guard authorities and also the Naval authorities should be encouraged to join because any oil spill or any debris in the ocean will affect our beaches.

Needless to say, we have travelled all across the Pacific Ocean from Panama Canal to Alaska, as well the Atlantic Ocean and have always admired the Environmental consciousness created by the Marine authorities. Every Oil tanker, every cargo vessel and every cruise liner is cautioned and heavily penalized for any ocean violations whatsoever. The major Cruise Liners are highly specialized to preserve the leftover tons of food so that the leftover food is processed and released only in certain areas for the marine species. Clean oceans have a great deal to contribute for clean beaches too.

Authorities should also plan certain portable toilet facilities at the beaches and make sure that they maintain the toilets regularly. Every bit of precaution, prevention and preservation will help maintain clean beaches that will in turn bring benefits for our travel and tourism.

All the beachside vendors also should be included in the clean up project. This should be an all out mass effort

Cleanliness drive of beaches & roads should not be limited to one day instead make this a weekend project of each school/college. Let NGOs & Corporate House come forward to provide refreshments to these young volunteers. It will be more fun fare than a burden for these young bloods. To make the task more enjoyable, supply them with trendy caps, glows, soft drinks while slogging in the sun and well organised annual award function with music and star attraction. Provide the participant certificate to all the volunteers and special awards to the best three volunteers in each ward. Give the winners Rs. 2,500 worth Purchase Coupons of MNC brands and see the difference. Include few retired military officials and MNC Directors/Officials as these youngsters guide and mentor. This new Gen-Y movement will transform the look of all our towns, cities, parks, beaches and grounds.
    Jai Hind!

Good observaion by "Jossey Saldanha, Mapusa". District Administration's plans for "future course of action" will take care of the rest. Clenliness drive "shuru karen to sahi". One more thing, please provide big hats protecting from sunlight upto shoulders. It is not necessary that the Sacrificers and voluntees - be ready for "sun-burns" on neck and shoulders.
