Mumbai: Fletcher Named New India Coach

Mumbai, Apr 27 (PTI) Duncan Fletcher was today appointed India's cricket coach to replace the highly successful Gary Kirsten, ending weeks of suspense on who will take over the high-profile job.

The 62-year-old Zimbabwean, a coached England with mixed results from 1999 to 2007, will take over the job for a two-year period.

The decision to appoint Fletcher, whose name was doing the rounds as a possible successor to Kirsten, was taken at the BCCI's working committee meeting here. The announcement came as a surprise as the BCCI had given no indication that it would name the coach today itself.

"The contract with Fletcher is for two years. He may not join the team in the West Indies as he has some prior commitments," BCCI Secretary N Srinivasan told reporters after the meeting.

Duncan Fletcher is a great coach, but so was Greg Chapell. He is tough, hard working and a strict disciplinarian with a no nonsense approach, the very traits hated by our super ego cricketers.Secondly his relationship with the media in the past has not been good. To me all this points towards disaster. I hope I am wrong. John Wright and Kirsten were successful because of their softer nature. In this regard a Geoff Lawson or a Geoff Marsh would have been more suited. Cricket is an international game and various countries playing different games like football, hockey, rugby rope in foreign coaches, and therefore I do not see any problem in appointing foreign coaches if they are good and are able to deliver. Great past players need not be great coaches. This is a minor issue and I totally disagree with Mr. Roshan's ultra nationalistic views.

    Roshan,
I fully agree with you but the problem lies with our Indian Cricketers.
They have a king size ego and do not listen to Indian coaches.
Haven’t you heard of the famous Hindi saying “Ghar Ki Murgi Dal Barabar”.

Whilst we boasts of great players of the past (DOnt need to name any) why are we still appointing a foreigner as our coach. I dont beleive that out of a billion people we are not able to find a person to coach the "Men in Blue". Whilst we ape the west in mostly everything, why cant we take an example of Australia and England whilst naming coaches.
