'Talenta -2011' to Present Bhurgyalen Sobhann at Kalaangann

Mangalore, May 1: About 52 children from across the three districts of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Kasargod who have been undergoing a seven-day residential camp "Talenta - 2011" (talent) at Kalaangann, are all set to showcase their multifarious talent on Sunday May 1.

The 114th "Mainyali Manchi", at Kalaangann at 6.30 pm on May 1 will provide a forum for these students to present "Bhurgyalen Sobhann", a programme exclusively by the children who participated in this week-long residential camp at Kalaangann. These children will exhibit their talents in singing, dancing and theatre, the three fields in which they have been trained in the last one week. The camp which began on April 25 will conclude on May 1.

Gurkar of Mandd Sobhann Eric Ozario says, "The residential camp is organized to encourage talents in children and also to introduce them to Konkani language and culture." These children were asked to choose any one of the three departments and they were given theoretical and practical training. Their learning in these 7 days will be presented in the form of a performance on the final day on May 1.

"The concept of the camp is 'Hason khelon Shikoyan' (to learn with lot of fun) and we ensure that these children enjoy what they learn," says Eric Ozario.

The camp also aims at inculcating discipline among students. They wake up at 6 am and their day ends at 10 pm with a review of the day’s events. Every day children spend half an hour meeting a ‘Konkani Maan Monis' (eminent Konkani personality) who has contributed greatly to the development of Konkani language, literature or culture. This is mainly to enable children to draw inspiration from such great personalities and learn from their experiences. These children are also taught to converse better in Konkani during the camp.

In the Bhurgyalen Sobhann programme on Sunday evening, the singing section will present 6 songs and the dance section will perform 4 dance numbers. The theatre section will perform a skit entitled "Shithak Khar Na Khandyak Bhar Na". Children were trained in music by Eric Ozario and his team comprising Lavita Lobo, Dylan Caldeira and Lenoy Lobo. Choreography training was provided by Merula D'Silva, Vernon D'Souza and Nandita Sequeira. John Permannur trained the children in theatre related activities.

Mandd Sobhann has been organizing such residential camps every year for children from 7th to 10th standard. This year for the first time Mandd Sobhann organized camps in Mumbai and has plans to hold such camps in Mysore. In Mumbai a camp was organized from April 10 to 17 and it received an overwhelming response, with as many as 72 children participating. A second camp will be organized from May 3 to 11 in Mumbai to enable more Konkani speaking children to participate in the camp. Similarly, a camp is scheduled to be held in Mysore by the end of June this year.

In Kalaangann an exclusive 3-day camp to learn Konkani will be held from May 10 to May 12 and those interested in learning Konkani can join the camp. This will be followed by a residential dancing workshop which will be organized at Kalaangann from May 15 to May 22. Expert choreographers will be invited to train students of this residential camp. There will also be a workshop on ‘Master of Ceremony’ to enable those interested in learning the nuisances of being a good MC.
